The first two comments are completely incorrect. It won’t harm your body to suck your tummy in, it’s just a form of exercising your stomach muscles. And it certainly won’t harm you lungs which are in your chest, not your abdomen.

ichibanarky is right that you’d have to do this a LOT to get the kind of results your friend is suggesting, but it is possible, especially if it developed into an unconscious habit for her. That’s very common for kids to do; they just start doing it one day and no one tells them to stop, so they just keep doing it (or they ARE told to stop and they do it anyway to rebel.) Some great examples are nail-biting and lip-chewing.

Personally, I messed up my teeth over years because as a kid I liked pressing my tongue against my front upper teeth. Eventually I needed braces because they got pushed outwards over time. So, it is possible to change your body through prolonged actions, but this takes years.

The very worst advice here is to go on a ‘diet.’ Diets don’t work, except for in very special circumstances, and that doesn’t mean there is some secret formula to dieting that only couple people know. It means that sometimes a person is in the right mind-set, and the right kind of diet for their body’s needs, and it just works out.

But usually the case is that people are pressured into diets, or feel guilty about their body, or whatever. Plus, people naturally hate being told what to do/eat. So most people resent their diet plans. Another huge problem with marketed diet plans is that, yes they work wonders until you drop down to that desired weight and go off the diet. Then you gain it back even quicker, and often even gain more weight than when you’ve started.

For those of you who will comment in response and tell me about how your diet worked wonders for you or a friend of yours, then that’s awesome, and I’m happy for you, but it worked because it was your choice to do it, not because someone told you.

So, then what is my advice? Well, if you do actually want to lose weight, I do have some advice, but your post didn’t say anything about that. Seems to me you were just wondering if your friend was lying or exaggerating. Well I’ve given my answer to that, so I guess I’m done. :)

If you’d like to talk more, I’m more than happy to.

Hope that helps.

Answer #2

Holding in your stomach does actually help to work the abdominal muscles, making them stronger, but you’d have to do it an awful lot to get toned effects from it.

It won’t wreck your body, though - that’s just silly.

Answer #3

sucking in all the time is harmful for your body. it presses your lungs in, making it harder for you to breathe. if you REALLY want to lose weight, go on a diet. don’t wreck your body by holding it in. 0Lily0

Answer #4

sucking in your stomach wont make you skinny … you’ll just get used to sucking it in and you’ll begin to do it all the time.. so it will look flatter .. but that will wreck your insides, just go on a diet if you need to lose weight .. because sucking it in all the time can be very dangerous
