Dr James Levine a Mayo Clinic physician says the bottom line is this: walking is good, whether the outcome measurement is blood pressure, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, joint problems or mental health.

“Getting out there and taking a walk is what it’s all about,” says James Levine, M.D., Ph.D., and a Mayo Clinic expert on obesity. “You don’t have to join a gym, you don’t have to check your pulse. You just have to switch off the TV, get off the sofa and go for a walk.”

Hey, it’s Jim Karas, the author of “The Cardio-Free Diet.” I truly feel that walking is something you should do if you enjoy it, but don’t count it as exercise as it does NOTHING to increase or maintain your body’s lean muscle tissue. Lean muscle is the most metabolically active tissue and after the age of 20, we are all losing 1/2 to 7/10s of a pound a year.

For women, at the onset of menopause, that number doubles and for all people, after the age of 70, you lose three pounds of muscle a year. That’s a HUGE number.

But, if you strength train as I have outlined in the book, you keep your metabolism up and burn lots and lots of calories 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

For all of you struggling with your weight, this is the missing link.

Good luck,

Jim Karas

Walking is a good exercise. I used to walk an hour every day and I believe it helped me stay healthy.

Your choice of exercise depends on what your needs and goals are. Walking is good exercise but it might not be the best choice for you.
