Can vitamin D can be taken from the sun when sunblock is on?

I was wondering if vitamin D can be created from the sun when sunblock is on.

Answer #1

I would assume so, sunblock doesn’t keep you completely protected. When you wear sunblock you still get a tan.

Answer #2

Sunscreen does reduce the amount of vitamin D produced by sun exposure. The same light that tans (UVB) also produces vitamin D. Since most people do not get enough vitamin D wearing sunscreen is a double edged sword; it helps prevent skin cancer but lower vitamin D levels increase the risk for several other cancers. Most people do not eat enough vitamin D rich foods and rely on sun exposure for at least some of their vitamin d. If you don’t like or don’t eat seafood or fortified foods (milk for example) and you don’t spend much time in the sun chances are you are already low on vitamin D. Personally I don’t put sunscreen on until I’ve been out in the sun for 30 minutes or so; I like to get some full sun but not enough to get burnt.

Answer #3

:). Come to south Africa, no problems with our vitamin D levels, even with 50+ sunscreen….

Answer #4

yes,all sunblock does is give less of a chance of getting burnt so say you use spf 15 you 15x less likely to get burnt
