Is it possible to build resistance to exercise?

okay well I’m 15 and around 50-55kg and 171cm or about 5ft7 so yeah a while back I started exercising to get a better body and now I’m like really fit (as in I can endure gruelling amounts of exercise) but I still don’t look the best I can look, an example of what I do is every morning I swim a km and walk 4km then a few times a week I do like a 13km-30km during the day and I horseride and do ballet and 150 situps a night and 60 squats..I think I’ve built up a resistance to exercise, cause non of this is fixing my legs and stomach and bum..is that possible? and if so, what do I need to do to stop it?

One of the most important aspects of exercise is progression. If you are doing a gruling exercise routine your body will adapt to be able to complete it but if you keep doing the same workout improvement will slow.

I think you will have better results if you change your workout every 3 months instead of just trying to continuously increase intensity (there is a limit where you will find yourself on a plateau and unable to improve). Perhaps for 3 months really hit the weights to try to add some muscle; then the next 3 months work on running or swim speed with hard intervals; then for the next 3 months work on endurance by doing long steady exercise sessions; then do something else. Pros call this approach periodization.

Don’t worry about the water thing. Drink when you are thirsty. If you know you are going to do a workout where you will become dehydrated (like a long bike ride in 100F heat) you might pre-hydrate by drinking a pint or two before you start but other than that just drink when you are thirsty.

I’ve had the best results from a system called HIT or High Intensity Training. HIT uses short very intense exercise sessions with comparitively heavier weight and fewer reps than other systems. For me this has been the most effective way to build muscle. Perform your exercises slowly with perfect form; no bouncing or cheating in the exercise except perhaps your spoter helping you complete your last repetition. Really slow down the negative resistance part of your rep; fighting the weight back down is a particularily good way to blast your muscles.
