Twilight sleep-wake state

This is soo creepy. It happens to me about twice a week. Its like im sleeping and I wake up.. But my body wont & cannot move no matter how hard I try. I went to the doctors and they said some teenagers have it, very few .. But its called “twilight sleep-wake state” I was wondering if anyone else has this or what you think?

I know ALL about this because it happens to me frequently. These are called Night Terrors, or more commonly known as Sleep Paralysis. It’s exactly how you described it for me too. It’s like you wake up but your body is still asleep. When you are sleeping, your body goes into “freeze mode” and all your muscles lock. t’s a mechanism that keeps you from geting hurt in your sleep. It’s very scary though. I know how you feel. When I have it, I will wake up and then as I’m drifting back to sleep I actually am dreaming before I’m actually sleeping! I hear voices and everything like I am dreaming but I’m still awake. I get scared so I try to shake myself out of it but it takes every muscle in my body to even move a FINGER, nevermind shake myself out of the paralysis. I keep rocking back and forth while laying on my side because I am scared to go to sleep again. And every time I start to drift back off, it is harder and harder for me to “rock” myself out of it. Some people even have reported the feeling as if someone is sitting on their chest. People used to believe there wa a demon trying to possess them when this happens. Then there’s a story about the old hag…something about a witch sitting on your chest. Not quite sure about that one though. But I thought I was a freak or had some kind of psychological problem when this first happened to me about 3 or 4 years ago. But I looked it up on the internet and read about it. More people have it than I thought. It still happens to me about once or twice a month now. Sometimes my eyes will be open and I will actually see people or things in my room that aren’t really there. Sometimes I feel someone touching me too…usually right behind me (I sleep on my side) touching my neck, head, or back. It’s really nothing to be scared of, but it scares me to death because I know I have no control over it. It’s very strange and hard to explain to other people who have not had it happen to them. But you and I know what it feels like. Hope this helps.

Are you sure this is what this is ? My body freezes at night also, but it has been diagnosed as a form of (nocturnal) dystonia. Some people believe that nocturnal dystonia and seizures are related, which could explain the response of someone here who wrote of having seizures. See a neurologist that specializes in movement disorders or sleep disorders. Get a 2nd opinion!

Answer #3

I think that has got to be the creepiest thing I have ever heard. Good luck with that, would freak me out too.

Answer #4

These are called “Night Terrors”. I don’t know much about them but I figured if I gave you a name you might be able to research it. Hope you get the answers. If I come across anything I will post more.
