Must you be saved to go to Heaven?

must you be saved to go to heaven?

Answer #1

Your question puzzles me a little because I don’t think you understand what being saved is compared to what going to heaven is. let me try to explain what I mean.

Throught the atonement of Jesus Christ, all men will be “saved”. Doesn’t matter who you are, what you did…you are saved. Meaning, you will be ressurrected through the atonement. All you have to do to be saved is to be born on earth.

After death, and after we are ressurrected, there will be a final judgement. That is where it will be determined whether or not you go to heaven. There you will be judged on how you lived your life, your thoughts, your desires, your actions, if you followed the commandments of God, if you endured to the end, and if saving ordinances were performed (like baptism).

I have more to say on the subject. If you want to talk, let me know!

Hope this helped.

Answer #2

Thanks for your explanation, Cindy. Your rather liberal Jewish upbringing was similar to my liberal Christian one, perhaps! My mum taught me that there was no Hell, and that she thought everyone went to Heaven. So, possibly like today’s Judaism, my beliefs have become more Biblical than my mother’s (although she is not fossilised in the ‘70s - she has moved on in faith in her own ways too).

The thing that would scare me about doing good deeds to get into Heaven is: ‘just how good would I have to be?’ What is the ‘good’ standard? Would I be perpetually concerned aboout my chances? To be honest, going to a Catholic school, I certainly knew Catholic girls and also nuns who worried about that.

Therefore for me, the Biblical doctrine, which can be summed up as: ‘You’ve got to Heaven, now be good’ is more motivating and less manipulative than the more common alternative: ‘Be good and you may get to Heaven’.

Thanks again for the fascinating insight into Jewish thinking. I like what your friend said too. I wonder, though, if she means ‘Go through Christ’ in this life, or when you die. There’s a bit of a difference and I’ve heard some Christians arguing either way…

Answer #3

I reckon god would be more focused on how good a person in general you are not how good you are at prayin

Answer #4

your acts of good are not measured by how good. it is not a series of checks and balances. you just try to be a good person. you let the woman with a crying baby in front of you in line, you take the newspaper to the porch of your neighbor, etc. just what has always been considered good acts. my friend believes that just as people think heaven has the pearly gates, it is Christ that is the gate and only Christ lets you pass. He has the final decision. I had always been tormented by the traditional christian version of heaven and hell. it was the one thing that I always struggled with and the one thing that kept me from accepting Christ. if I accepted Christ, I was admitting that my kind and generous father, my dear grandparents and the rest of the 6 million killed were in hell, along with hitler. it would be as if I were turning my back on my history and loved ones. I just couldn’t go along with the idea of the perpetual “old testament” G-d, plagues and famine. I wanted the “new testament” G-d, forgiving and loving. and I couldn’t see that G-d sending my father to hell. when my friend explained her heaven to me, it all made sense. Upon your death, Christ will decide.

Answer #5

Yes. If you believe and confess that Jesus is master, that you are a sinner, if you ask him to save you, and you make Jesus your master, he can save you, and you can go to heaven. There is nobody but Jesus that can get you into heaven. Only Jesus can save you, but it is up to you to ask him to do this.

Answer #6

A Christian believes as the Bible clearly states, ANYONE who does not have Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior are not Heaven-bound - see John 3 : 16 - it says ‘Whosoever (regardless of religion) believes in Him (Jesus) will not perish…Hope this helps !!

I wouldn’t say ‘any man’, I’d say what I am, a sinner saved by grace striving to be careful in all that I do and say, so that it pleases my Lord and Savior - if you re-read what I said, I never claimed to know >>> you don’t know what is in my heart <<< …Take care !!

Answer #9

Cindy127 - Please tell me where this is found in the Bible (verse):

I have a christian friend that when asked my question, told me that to gain entrance to heaven, you must go through Christ. meaning that Christ would make the final decision >> Upon your death, Christ will decide <<<

Answer #10

Sillygirl006: We can work out our salvation with fear (reverence) and trembling, but, is Jesus your Lord and Savior, is He living in your heart. That is the level playing field.

Answer #11

We are not saved by works of righteousness which we have done but according to his mercy he saved us by the washing of the regeneration. Titus 3:5

For by grace are ye saved through faith, that not of yourselves it is a gift of God not of works lest any man should boast. Eph. 2:8-9

Isiah 64:6 Says that all our works are as a filthy rag.

For whosoever keepeth the whole and yet in one point, he is guilty of all. James 2:10

Answer #13

God being pure cannot even look upon sin - man, even in his very best state is a sinner - on judgement day, either: your sins are covered by the blood-shed sacrifice of Jesus Christ on the cross (salvation and only salvation - being a nice person isn’t good enough - even at our very best, we are but filthy rags), and remembered no more or they are not (your sins are not covered) - where God’s great love comes into play is, He provided a WAY (Jesus) for us not to perish and live in Heaven with Him (He certainly didn’t have to do this but did because He loved us so) - if you read carefully John 3:16, this is exactly what it says - each person will either accept or reject, you must decide for yourself and yes, it’s so important, it has eternal consequences - He Loves you and wants you to accept God’s free gift to man - Jesus.

Answer #14

I never said that I either had or had not accepted Christ. you don’t know what is in my heart and with all due respect you are “any man” also.

Answer #15

The Bible says that no flesh is justified by the works of the Law. Read the book of Galations its right before The book of Ephesians. Ephesians 2:8-9 say for by grace are you saved by faith, and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God (gifts are given not worked for, if you have to work for it then it is not a gift). Not of works lest any man should boast.

God knew in His infinate wisdom if man could earn or work for His eternal life he would boast and say look at me. That’s why Paul wrote this.

Romans 6:23 says For the wages of sin is death but the Gift of God is Eternal Life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

It dosen’t get any plainer than this Eternal Life is a Gift, Gift, Gift, Gift not because of our works See Titus 3:5

Isiah 64:6 says all our righteousness (work, work, work) are as a filthy rag. Do you know what this literally says! Its talking about a womams mintril Fag.

My termanology is not wrong. It lines up with the bible when it say we don’t have to work.

Answer #16

Okay, It’s fairly historically certain that Jesus existed. Even secular historians agree on that. The only question is, “Who was He”? If God doesn’t exist, where did we come from? Do you believe that this whole world and all animals, plants, and humans came from some cosmic chance? Thats takes just as much faith as believing in God. You can’t see oxygen, so how do you know it exists? Why are humans so much different that animals? This world works together wonderfully. Plants clean the air, water gives us the nuritionment we need, the sun gives us the exact perfect amount of heat. Did this all happen by chance? By some accident? Its more logical that someone created this all.

Answer #17

sarabella, you are totally uneducated and nieve of the world around us. Where did we all com from? We sprung from the forces of nature and evolution given billions of years. And of course it all works out good, or we wouldn’t be here discussing it. Humans are so much different than animals because of Money and the large brains we developed through evolution. There was another intelligent species that were aswell able to think outside their immediate functions, they were neanderthals, they are extinct now, because they weren’t the fittest. We just evolved to have such developed brains that we are able to ponder such questions , and expierance spirituality, and such. the reason we can consider such ideas. I have no doubts that the variety of viruses, bacteria, fungi , vegitation and animal life we see on this planet came from evolution. It makes a lot more sense then the Bible. Or just simply saying God did it, because you don’t understanding the many laws of physics, natruel selection and evolution.

Answer #18

With all due respect - it is best to listen to what God said in His word, the Bible, than any man - that scares me because Satan is indeed the great ‘Deciever’ - if he can keep you from accepting Christ he has you and the Bible makes it very clear you’re not Heaven-bound - this is not an opinion, it’s what His word says…Take care !!

Answer #19

oh, I am so glad you questioned me about this because I wanted to answer it. first of all, again, you’re incorrectly using some key terms. You are confusing “eternal life” with “immortality”. Let me define them:

-immortality: endless life or existance. -eternal life: being without beginning or end; Of or relating to spiritual communion with God, especially in the afterlife.

I found these at answer.com. they are just definitions from a random dictionary that has no connection to the LDS faith. (so they’re unbiased).

as you can see, immortality has nothing to do with God. Immortality is just, living forever. Eternal life, however, is different. It is immortality with God—living forever with God. Through the atonement and resurrection of Jesus Christ we gain immortality. whether we believe in j.c. or not, we will live forever through the price he paid for us with the atonement. we will all be resurrected. not all of us, however, will be able to have eternal life…a life of living with God forever. this only comes through (like you said) believing in God and doing His will. That means following his commandments. Look at 1 John 3:15 for example. it says, “Whosoever hateth his brother is a murderer: and ye know that no murderer hath eternal life abiding in him.” a murderer has disobeyed the commanments of God and sinned, therefore, he cannot have eternal life. So our actions as well as our beliefs, desires and thoughts, will determine whether or not we gain eternal life as well as the gift from God of immortality.

now, about your john the baptist question—that seems really out of the blue to ask. What made you ask me that?

Answer #20

I was raised in the reformed jewish temple. I was also raised during a time when there still was a fear that what happened in europe could happen here. in the 60’s jews were scared that the white, christian community would turn on us. so, we were taught a more gentile way of living. I was taught that there was no hell, as we think of it. that hell was a place where your soul went to contemplate your life. that heaven is where G-d resides and that you must perform daily mitzvahs (good deeds) and try to be a good person and follow the teachings of G-d. then you would spend eternity with G-d. I know that jewish teaching has changed, the more liberal reformed is more like what I considered conservative judaism to be. jews are now stronger and are encouraged to embrace their religion. I have a christian friend that when asked my question, told me that to gain entrance to heaven, you must go through Christ. meaning that Christ would make the final decision.

Answer #21

Answer #22

“Look unto Me and be save all the ends of the earth, for I am God and there is none other” Isaiah 45:21-22, 45:14, 45:5, 43:11, and many others. “Return to Me for I have redeemed you” 44:22, and others available here, too! Being a good person is not enough, call upon the Lord and follow Him, it’s that easy!

You want to share together the promise in Christ Jesus?

Answer #23

You have to believe Jesus came to earth as a baby and grew up not to condem the world but to show us the way to get to heaven!

God sent his only son to be cruxified by man, God could have taken His son from the cross and Jesus could have decided “No I dont want to die for all these people why should I?” But he did’nt and a good job too! cause then satan would have won the battle and we would all be lost to him with no hope.

Do you really think that the pharasise got it wrong and killed Jesus by mistake? You need to pick up the Bible and start reading it, before you make comments like that !! It really saddens me when I read comments like that.

Do you know what the Bible is? Do you think it is a fairy tale book? NO it is Gods way of communicating with us each word in the book is his direct word to you!

God so loved the world (You and me too) That he gave us his only begotten Son, who ever believes in him shall not die but have everlasting life in heaven found in John:3-16

Those who are non believers and satan worshippers shall be cast down into the lake of fire. When Jesus returns only those who believed and followed him will be gathered and taken to heaven, the earth shall be destroyed and all those left will die.

You cannot! see him and say to him on that day “Lord I did not believe in you but now I see you I believe” His reply will be to all non believers:
“Assurdley I say to you, I do not know you.” Found in Mathew 25:12

God the Father has given all of us a choice! Let me see , believe and live for ever in Gods presence or Burn and die because of ignorance and self importance. Leaves much to think about really dont you think? I hope this has helped you see a little clearer. God Bless

Answer #24

That is incorrect to say that just being born to earth makes you saved.
I Jn. 5:11-13 says: And this is the record that God given to us eternal life, and this life is in his son. He that hath the son hath life, and he that hath not the son of God hath not life. These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal ife, and that ye may believe in the name of the Son of God.

The fact is some people won’t ever accept or believe in Christ. According to these verses only those who hath the Son will gain eternal life.

Sillygirl006, I am curious do you believe that John the beloved, the disciple who layed his head on Jesus’ bosom is still alive?

According to Doctrine and Covenants 7:1-8 he is. I will quote it from the passage:

“And the Lord said unto me: John, my beloved, what desirest thou? For if you shall ask what you will, it shall be granted unto you. And I said unto him: Lord, give unto me power over death, that I may live and bring souls unto thee. And the Lord said unto me: because thou desirest this thou shalt tarry until I come in my glory, and shalt prophesy before nations, kindreds, tongues and people. And for this cause the Lord said unto Peter: If I will that he tarry till I come, what is that to thee? For he desired of me that he might bring souls unto me, but thou desiredst that thou mightest speedily come unto me in my kingdom. I say unto thee, Peter, this was a good desire; but my beloved has desired that he might do more, or a greater work yet among men than what he has before done. Yea, he has undertaken a greater work; therefore I will make him as flaming fire and a ministering angel; he shall minister for those who shall be heirs of salvation who dwell on the earth. And I will make thee to minister for him and for thy brother James; and unto you three I will give this power and the keys of ministry until I come. Verily I say unto you, ye shall both have according to your desires, for ye both joy in that which ye have desired.

According to this John the beloved, Peter and James were granted power over death until Jesus comes. We know that he hasn’t returned yet. My question is why aren’t they the heads over the Mormon Church. I lived in Utah for 9 years and visited the Temple Square many times and I never saw any of these three. Seems like they would be a big part of the Mormon church

Jesus said ye must be born again to inherit the kingdom of God Jn. 3:3

Answer #25

Have you guys ever heard of near death expierances? Because I’m not really sure where you get the idea that heaven really exist, unless you’ve been brainwashed by a bunch of nonsense. Well near death expierances, occur when your brain cells stress from being deprived of oxygen. Then you are revived by your doctor and remeber the dreamly fantasy that your brain was having so you wouldn’t fear such a thing. We are just insignific blimps in the universe with big brains, that evolved from simple carbon-based life forms that thrived off of Earth’s resources, given Massive amounts of time, when we die we will be recycled back into the earth, and eventually, when the sun engolfs the Earth billions of years from now, and explodes, back into the universe, which Earth is a very very VERY very very itsy bitsy small part of . Have you heard of aliens visiting Earth? Well they could be specimens that are 10 billion years more advanced then us, they were just as fortunate as us, to live on such a planet able to support life. Once we are gone from this planet, if ever. A new species will eventually evolve to use tools and such to better their existance and become masters of the enviorment, furthermore they’ll be able to think outside the realm and their immediate functions, and be able to question “why are we here” “who created us”. Will it be chimps? will it be squid? They will not understand the World around them, just like the egyptions or greeks and believers of religious non-sense. It’s meant as a guide to living hopfully and morally and explaining such things not understood, not as facts. In the end our time in the universe compared to the 24 hour clock will only be a fraction of a second. Of course all things come to an end, so will the universe, but only to be reborn, and evolve again in the future? Hope you enjoyed my science lesson :] enjoy your self in the very fabric of time, you exist in that is holding you together.

Answer #26

Correct me if I’m wrong, but I think christians believe that people of the jewish faith go to hell because they don’t believe Jesus Christ was the true son of God.

Answer #27

yes…you are saved through His grace (the atonement) and given the gift of IMMORTALITY…not eternal life. you must gain eternal life through your works. otherwise, what’s the point of repentance and forgiveness? Honestly, if our works have NOTHING to do with us going to heaven, then why must we repent of our sins and forgive others of theirs? what’s the point of sin then? why say that something is bad if it doesn’t matter to us in the end?

Isaiah 1:16-20 (which is one of my favorite passages in Isaiah) says: 16 ¶ Wash you, make you clean; put away the evil of your doings from before mine eyes; cease to do evil; 17 Learn to do well; seek judgment, relieve the oppressed, judge the fatherless, plead for the widow. 18 Come now, and let us reason together, saith the Lord: though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool. 19 If ye be willing and obedient, ye shall eat the good of the land: 20 But if ye refuse and rebel, ye shall be devoured with the sword: for the mouth of the Lord hath spoken it.

As you can see, we can be forgiven of our sins…we can be “as white as snow” again, but we must first “cease to do evil”, and be “obedient”. Our works determine whether or not gain eternal life. Our Savior has already paid our debts to give us the gift of immortal life.

I’m really not trying to bash your beliefs, but these are mine. take them or leave them…I just want you to know what mormons know.

ya know, we could quote scripture at each other the whole day, but if our definitions of key terms are not the same, then there is really no point. we’re no where near a level playing field. I don’t want this discussion to turn into a competition.

on a different note, I really liked the scripture that you mentioned in isaiah 64:6. Mormons (I) believe that by being born to this earth, we are given the gift of immortality and the chance to be with God again forever. We believe that the way to do this is by doing the best we can here on earth—by repenting when we lose our way and sin, by taking part in important saving ordinances, and by enduring to the end. the scripture you mentioned talks about how we are all unclean. even though we all have righteous moments, we are still all unclean. mormons believe that after all we can do…our savior will take upon Him our sins and carry our burdens so that we may have eternal life. it’s an amazing and precious plan that our Heavenly Father has prepared for us.

I encourage you to learn more about this plan of salvation. the best way to do that is to study the scriptures, but most importantly, to pray for understanding and confirmation of your learning from the Holy Chost. Be open to His promptings.

I am jewish, my family is jewish, german jews. most perished in germany. and I have a hard time thinking of them in hell, right next to hitler. but your answer…ahhh. the humanity and love you expressed by using words such as “You might ought to think twice before attempting to show up at Heavens Gates, expecting to gain entrance with your own merit…” and “Gods new heaven, will not be filled with self righteous people that insist on having their own way. “ my, my…what love. thanks.

Answer #30

You might ought to think twice before attempting to show up at Heavens Gates, expecting to gain entrance with your own merit…

God provided a way for each of us, but, if we attempt to bypass his plan… then.. why on earth would we want to be with him to begin with???

Gods new heaven, will not be filled with self righteous people that insist on having their own way.

Answer #31

Even the devil believes IN Jesus and heaven.

What we must do is BELIEVE Christ, what He teaches (present tense) in the Bible as many have quoted above. He is: our Everlasting Father, Wonderful, Counselor, Almighty God, Prince of Peace, who, if you are the next person reading this, and were the ONLY person on the earth, He would have died just for you.

His atonement for all of us was paid ONCE for ALL. He has take away all guilt, pain, sorrow, suffering and heft it upon Himself, that we may live a life to serve Him. Speak to God on your failed paper, your car wreck, your big bully brother, skipped over job promotion, He will get you through all tests in life.

We grieve the Holy Spirit when we flop around sitting on the fence, as being neither hot nor cold. Know what bad coffee is like? Or if you like it hot or cold, only one way, and not the other? Or how about a pop that has been sitting around getting warm? Gets spit out doesn’t it? We all have our preferences.

Jesus said to the church in Laodicea, “I know your deeds, that you are neither cold nor hot. I wish you were either one or the other. So because you are lukewarm–neither hot nor cold–I am about to spit you out of my mouth.” Revelation 3:15.

To hear the Word of God and do nothing is worse than never hearing it at all.

Every single one of us has been given a choice.

My two boys, now 16 and 13, each at the time were 5 years old, raised their little hands during Vacation Bible School when the question was raised, “Who would like to know more about Jesus, would you like to invite Him into your heart, just raise your hand.

“As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord, for He is our God.” is on a wall in our home and it comes from Joshua.

What peace to know that I will be seeing them in heaven!

Every household has a spiritual leader, male or female, and we are lifting up one Kingdom or lowering another.

Blessings to all!

Answer #32

I am a research biochemist and I believe in evolution and my religion. I think everything exists. aliens and all.but thanks for the lesson any way.

Answer #33

I hope this makes sense…but I believe in a relationship not religion. I believe if you love God then everything else will fall into place. such as wanting to be like him and that youll believe in his teachings. And that means Jesus as well. “No one comes to the Father but through me”. Also some people believe that the only way to be saved is being baptized. I apologize if anyone disagrees with me…But I believe that being baptized is a figure of speech for being buried and being resurrected as a new being. Just as Jesus has died and come back to life. Before we are buried we are the “old’ man and as we are dunked or emersed we are raised up as the ‘new’ man. I feel that God will lay that on our hearts to do so if its the right thing to do. Personally I was baptized, emersed and I never doubted the resemblance of it. But back to the relationship… I mean think about it…if you have a relationship with someone and your signifant other is trying to communicate, love, bless you but you dont have any desire to do any of those things back then that looks like a very unhealthy relationship… Well think of it in a spiritual sense. God tries to speak to us everyday and craves our love but we never reply back then wouldnt you say that that would be an unhealthy relationship? I mean answer it for yourself. Also I dont believe just being a good little girl is going to save you. God has designed us just for him. He loves us more than anything he has created and we should give him back the love hes given us. I think God has been trying to save us all along its just whether or not we except his invitation to be with him for eternity. I mean he did send his son to die for us. Shows me that he would go to the extreme measure if he had to.

Answer #34

Jesus said: ‘I am the Way, the Truth and the Life. No one can come to the Father except through me’. So, for Christians, the SURE way of getting to God in life and in death (death being the heaven part) is to come to Jesus. Turning from going your own way and giving Jesus your life is what being ‘saved’ means to a Christian. Amblesed’s answer describes this in more detail.

Later on in the New Testament it is written that we are to be judged on what we have known. So Moses and the Ancient Hebrews are judged according to the Jewish Law that God gave them. A person living in circumstances where they never hear the news about Jesus will also be judged according to their own standards.

But the question is, how many of us meet our own standards? We sometimes feel we have let ourselves down, let alone God. This is why having Jesus to bring us to God is described as ‘saving’ us, because being judged according to our own moral laws usually leaves us looking pretty bad. Christians believe only Jesus is perfect, so only He can save us.

Maybe other people do get to Heaven following judgement according to what they have known - the Bible implies that this is possible. But I believe Jesus whe He says He is the Way.

Can you tell us about what Jews believe about Heaven, please? I know what Jewish people at the time of Christ believed, but I don’t know much about current belief. Thanks very much for asking the question. Your information about your family is really moving and I can see why this question isn’t just idle thinking for you…

Answer #35

Sorry, but heaven is just a fantasy land. You die, you turn into dirt, and that’s that.

Answer #36

God saves all who repent and turn to Him.

People in countries that do not hear the Word have laws written on their heart already, just as we truly know it is not good to murder others or steal from them.
