Is it bad to exercise on an empty stomach?

Answer #1

It can be bad, yes. The problem is, you will not have that food fuel for energy that your body requires to exercise. You will find yourself tiring faster, and lactic acid will enter your muscles sooner from lack of energy. There are not lasting damages if you stop at that point, though.

Answer #2

whatever you are used to doing? I cant work out if I can still feel my food, I usually have to wait at least 3 - 4 hours after eating or else I feel like crap while working out. My wife is the opposite though, she likes to get a McD cheeseburger before she leads Zumba classes.

Answer #3

However you choose, just make sure it’s something small, since eating a large dish then working out half an hour or so later, probably will feel a bit of sickness if you work out too much. I’ve just experienced it last night XD a large tray of pasta, an hour before zumba was a mistake XD

Answer #4

I agree XD as I’ve just mentioned in my comment, I have to wait a while before going to zumba class, or this other one we do now(more Indian genre) but anyways, I feel sick if I eat and more woozy ;3 Though it does vary on people, but yet again I can never eat, bfore I go.

Answer #5

Ya you should have something in your tummy. You might feel light headed.

Answer #6

Yes it’s bad. I’ve done it before. Made me want to give up on my workout and I did. I found myself more weak and tiring. Unless you do an hour walk then it’s ok because I always do an hour walk when I wake up with no food in me and I feel fine.

Answer #7

Actually I have read waking up and running without eating is better to burn fat but many people aren’t able to do it. I personally run better with an empty stomach because most of the time after I eat I cramp or nearly puke

Answer #8

It’s not bad, and it’s not good. It’s neutral in a way. If you’re used to training after a meal, then go for it, if you train fasted, then do that.

There is a style of training for weight loss called Intermittent Fasting (IF) and what it is, is going up to 6-8 hours before your first meal, but making sure you hit your macro/calorie intake before you go to bed. It’s had lots of success and there are people who adapt to training fasted. There are some conflicting results from research saying that eating prior to training makes your metabolism not as efficient and bunch of medical jargon that average people won’t understand, but again these are conflicting results. Just do what you feel.

Personally, I can train either way and feel fine. I’ve trained within 20 minutes of eating as well as 7+ hours after eating and I see no real significant difference in strength, muscle gain, or anything.

Just so we’re clear, the ones saying “You need the food for quick energy” are forgetting that food doesn’t digest the same time you eat it to give you this “energy”. The food you eat prior to working out isn’t used as fuel, the food you ate 8+ hours ago is your fuel. Your digestive system can spend almost half a day digesting one meal while you eat 4-5 meals a day.
