Does the US really care about security?

Case in point: there are three democratic elections this year, one of which happened 12 hours ago, in a Muslim country, that’s very close to Pakistan. The established government has been proven to have ties to Al Qaeda, AND has had the same president for 30 years.

I would think if any of the lip service to security in our government made sense, the US would have attempted to see that this historical election, the first in that countries history with multiple candidates, was fair. However, I have yet to see a single write up of the election in the US media.

I’m disgusted with the US foreign policy at the moment. Is it just me, or are we “doing well” at advancing the cause of world peace & improving security?

@toadaly

ROFLMAO, I think they got the idea of how to rig the election from the US, actually :) Fair point.

@religionisgood

Nope, “team” of observers that I know of are there, and we’ve been getting more updates from “people on the ground” than are available on any news outlet. Sick & wrong, really, but what can you do when our own domestic issues are so pressing.

Still, if we can spend 10 billion a month in Iraq, it seems like such a strategic opportunity to look good would have been too amazing to pass up, given it’s proximity to Pakistan & India, etc.

Sigh.

I thought there was talk of the US and other countries sending observers to this election (Maldives). The lack of coverage is disappointing, but there was a mid level US diplomatic officer saying a couple months ago the US embassy would send a team to join observers from other countries. Did this end up not happening?

You’re right about the Maldives, though…there’s no denying it’s importance. Islamic militants have been using it as a base to shuttle people, supplies, and money throughout South Asia and East Africa for years.

heh, shouldn’t we make sure our own elections are fair first?

Answer #4

I hardly pay attention to news from the Maldives -.- but what I do know is that it is quite popular with tourists from the so-called “free world” (maybe I confused it with Mauritius) so it’s kind of hard for me to think that they are radical Muslims

Answer #5

are we “doing well”? The answer to that is obvious. A resound NO!!

When you have an administration that cares more about the profits of multinational coporations then it does for the welfare of the country and its people, it should be no surprise when the only thing they offer regarding national security is lip service and campaign rhetoric.

Answer #6

Wow that is crazy…I haven’t heard anything about that election either. We still have a LONG way to go with improving security.
