Why do my knees hurt while on an exercise bike?

I’ve been having a problem lately. I’ve started trying to use a stationary bike to exercise, but my knees start to kill me every time. So far I’ve just been enduring it, but I feel like I could go longer if my knees weren’t so sore. Will this get better as I go? Or should I be doing something to strengthen my knees? Also, am I hurting myself by continuing to bike even though it hurts?

I’m not wearing shoes. Should I?

if it hurts the whole time then stop, try stretching before you bike, and maybe you need new shoes but I doubt that’s the problem.
