sue90 makes it sound like being a vegan is a bizare and difficult thing to do. As long as you eat enough food and eat a variety of healthy foods you will get plenty of protein. Protein deficiency is virtually unknown in 1st world countries and only occurs in people who are not getting nearly enough calories. There is complete protein in all foods that contain protein in that there is some of each essential amino acid. Our protein utilization is limited by which essential amino acid is in shortest supply but even vegans consume enough more protein than they require that this inefficiency does not lead to protein deficiency. Moreover, it isn’t necessary to eat foods at the same meal to get complimentation so unless you are eating a mono diet some complimentation is occuring. That is why I was curious how luvbunny14’s doctor determined she was protein deficient.

What medicine did they perscribe?

What tests have you had that lead to the diagnosis of protein deficiency?

What do you eat in a typical day?

One of the best sources of medical information for vegans comes from Dr. John McDougall. He sells books, videos, and has expensive retreats but he also puts enough information on his website to learn all you need to know without buying anything.

He even answers email with specific questions though he usually takes a few days to get back to you.

Dear luvbunny14, Being a Vegan is very difficult. It takes a lot of study to know where and how to get enough protein in your diet. This is a common problem for Vegans. You need to find foods that will give you protein such as legumes and rice…will make a complete protein. Do your reading and homework on the subject. Women are particularly at risk with Vegan diets and unless you know what you are doing you will always be sick. Sue…good luck
