What are the point of sugar pills in birth control?

Im curious I’ve been told by a doctor that you cannot get pregnant even when your taking the sugar pills (aka) the pills you take when your on your period my question is if they don’t have any hormones in those pills how are you keeping from getting pregnant when you have sex that week?

Because the pills themselves are not blocking the pregnancy, they prevent ovulation (I.e. the release of the egg), which prevents pregnancy. The sugar pills are in place so that you dont forget to start back up with the pills in a week.
