What are your thoughts on school massacres?

I looked at a timeline of school massacres http://www.infoplease.com/ipa/A0777958.html It’s ridiculous the amount of these shootings are in the United States. What are your thoughts on gun control? Who’s to blame? What are your thoughts to put an end or at least make it near impossible to perform another school massacre?

I don’t think additional gun control is the solution. If you take away guns, then just the people who have them illegal have guns. Honest citizens don’t have a way to defend themselves.

Also, all the schools might as well have a “We Can’t Protect Ourselves” sign out front. Its a guaranteed gun-free zone. Combine that with teens that are angry at other students, and you have a problem. I have heard a couple ideas with some promise. Soldiers that have come back from their military tours could be stationed to protect schools in high risk areas. Or teachers to have a police style self defense and firearms training, with the option to carry a firearm or non-lethal form of protection at school. Also like the idea of basic self defense training as part of gym class (maybe with a bit of Kendo in there - that will encourage people to more quickly). Basically, make it so schools can fight back, not have to wait for the cops to show up.

As to who is to blame? I blame it on the parents. I had plenty of motive and opportunity (not to mention lots of violent video games and music) to imitate Columbine when I was in middle school, and I never even had the urge to. Why? I think good parenting and a supporting family.

I agree, blame the parents, but as for blame the game, give it a brake, It has been statistically proven that teen violence has gone down since the rise of violent video games. If a person gets the idea to shoot up a school, they’ll get it with or without the games/music. I personally find it relaxing to play MK if I get flustered. You can kick someone’s butt without physically causing any harm to anyone. I actually recall watching an episode of Pen and Teller BullS**T in which they went into detail on the subject of video games and violent video games. They tested the theory on a boy who plays a lot of gory shooter games by taking him to a gun rally to fire a real gun. The boy actually broke down n tears and never wanted to fire a real gun again, but continues playing his games. There is 0-non correlations for video game violence encouraging real violence, but, as statics prove,m it does help bring it down.

Arg, did it again!!! As for music, one has to already have it in their mind. All the music does it get them pumped to do it, there fore, they have to already have decided that they’re going to do it, how they’re going to do it, etc. Though, again, speaking personally since I do listen to metal( along with varies other types of music) I find it more mellowing rather than “Ya, lets go set the town on fire like the song said”. It allows you to intact in your mind that you couldn’t do or say in real life without serious consequence. But not many metal songs have so violent lyrics as suggesting massacring and murder. I’ve noticed more rap and R&B songs do, but a majority of people don’t even notice the lyrics half the time and mostly just dance to the beat or whatever.

as long as we are assigning ‘blame’ here we will never solve this issue, when i was younger we had a group called the PMRC that was against heavy metal music- a genre i was very much a part of- blaming music was wrong then, and blaming music and games is wrong now. the problem is MENTAL ILLNESS and needs to be identified in that aspect- to do this will require a concerted effort from EVERYONE involved in someone’s life from the parent to friends and co-workers- we need to begin speaking up to identify warning signs earlier and get these people help before they have their psychotic breaks. would they seek to ban an automobile if it crashes into the school- or into a bus?? i don’t think so. the gun banning lefties need to quit sensationalizing these incidents and using them for political leverage to further their gun grabbing agenda- and buy a clue to understand that there are a LEGION of ways to create mayhem if you possess a sick mind- and quit focusing on the tools and attack the MENTAL ISSUE.

Follow Connery’s advice to Costner in ‘The Untouchables’ and see where that gets you. or not.

Answer #8

I meant ‘what are you prepared to do?’ March on washington and demand a halt to gun production or summat like that. not really advice more a question exhorting him to up the ante.

Answer #9

@hanji yushugi - I agree. Many people that do commit these terrible acts have some short of mental issue that needs to be dealt with. Whether it’s the parents or their friends that speak out and get them help it doesn’t matter.

Ok apparently I can’t start a new line…. stupid enter key…………………..any ways, I feel its mostly the parents responsibility to spot these issues with their children and get them the proper help. The child IS the parents responsibility to raise and help through all the issues of life, and if you can’t do that you shouldn’t be having kids.

Answer #12

i agree entirely with the minor child still living with the parents- definitely hard to commit your child to the care of an institution- but what is the alternative? to live with the stigma of being the parent of a mass murderer- or worse to be killed by said child. adults however are the responsibility of friends and family and to a degree parents also. the ‘solutions’ that obama has presented to will have little impact on this violence- i bought my AK and all the 30 round clips i could afford DURING the clinton gun ban and the brady bill- it only stopped importation of the banned weapons and magazines and grandfathered in the millions of weapons already here. so i am simply glad we are on the same page here and i hope it gets those who are ‘on the fence’ over this issue to really stop and think about who the proposed gun ban is aimed at- NOT CRIMINALS but LAW ABIDING FREE CITIZENS of this country.

Answer #13

we all need to be trained in identifying the warning signs of mental illness so we can get these people help before they resort to violence.
