Reasonable request?

I was on a recent job interview the other day, and they had me fill out a job application. one of the questions was: a request for my social security number. do you think it is appropriate to request this number if they have not offered you employment? do you think that if they want to hire you, then you can give them the number?

Answer #1

A lot of places do that so they can do background checks, and other things like that.

Answer #2

That should not have been on a job application. They are not supposed to ask for your social security number until you are actually hired - as the only reasont they are supposed to get it is for tax reasons. I would not have put it on there.

Answer #3

You should never give out your social security number unless you have been hired.

I’m surprised a company actually put this on their application…perhaps you should notify your business bureau.
