Can prospective employers find out if you've been on unemployment?

I read online that many companies will not hire you if you’ve been unemployed for more than six months because they assume something’s wrong with you. I got laid off last year and decided to just take the year off surviving on unemployment and savings while working on a novel. I’m about to move and start job hunting and I’m wondering if I should not tell prospective employers that I was unemployed for a year. (PS I have a buddy who owns an IT company that said I could just say I worked freelance for him during that year).

They can find out if they want to look. I’d say if they ask, it’s best to be honest. There is something to what you’re saying. the best way to find a job is to already have a job which is why people already working get hired more often than unemployed people.
