the whole saying is meaning that you are swearing to keep something, like a promise prehaps. like lets suppose susie told anne a really big secret and the only way susie would tell anne is if anne said i cross my heart and hope to die. its just saying that you'll keep a promise.
"Cross my heart hope to die, stick a needle in my eye". Wow that saying brings back many childhood memories. I haven't heard it for years!
because if your crossing ur heart ur making a promise on the thing that makes you live...if u break the promise u shuld be dead, basically
"Cross my heart, hope to die, if I ever tell a lie." Thats how I heard it.
