If it's not an open relationship, isn't it cheating? If you're happy, why cheat?

Upon a recent conversation with a guy friend of mine about another guy we know, my friend said this guy’s a jerk and that a few weeks dating this girl, it was an open relationship…on the guy’s end. So, it seems my friend is against open relationships, right? His tone of voice and facial expression sure matched that he thinks they’re not right. But yet, this guy (the friend) asks girls for photos and makes dirty suggestions and jokes, messes around, and sometimes even has sex with other girls….but he has a girlfriend and they’ve been dating for like 6 months. He claims that things are going great between them but it wasn’t too long into the relationship before he started the other stuff. I mean, if he thinks open relationships aren’t cool, I’m assuming their relationship isn’t open, so technically he’s cheating on her, right? I’m assuming she knows nothing of what he’s doing. And if he’s so happy with her, why cheat on her for the majority of the relationship? He’s dated other girls before and not done this and never to this extent.

If you are correct in that it isn’t an open relationship, that both partners have knowledge of what he is doing outside of the relationship, then yes, it is cheating. Thing is, there are plenty of reasons for cheating. It’s not always just because something is wrong in the relationship though that can be a reason. People cheat for the thrill, to experience it, to feel good about themselves (that they can get), because something is lacking in the relationship, or to simply just have sex with other people etc. There are just so many reasons for cheating, only he can really know why he does it and even he may not realize it.
