Are IUD's effective as birth control?

My girlfriend is getting an IUD and I would like to know is it safe enough to have sex without a condom or to ejaculate inside her with little risk of pregnancy. I have no problem wearing a condom but I was just curious. We are both STD free so thats not an issue.

Thanks

I have had the iud for a year now and I havent gotten pregnant. by the way does your girlfriend have children? usually girls who have children get one inserted. when your having sex with her you will probably feel the strings that hang down from the iud but it is not painful or umcomfortable. you will get use to it and eventually wont even notice its there

Actually, condoms are way less effective than the IUD. That’s like playing Russian roulette. The failure rate is well over 10 percent. The purpose of the IUD as with any form of hormonal birth control is to prevent pregnancy after gasp unprotected sex. (it’s safe if you’re in an STD free monogamous relationship) IUDs prevent pregnancy by inhibiting fertilization of the egg.

The copper version is a bit more reliable than the progesterone version

Failure rates—

* Copper:

      o Typical use: 0.8%

      o Perfect use: 0.6%

* Progesterone:

      o Typical use: 2%

      o Perfect use: 1.5%

If your worried, take a visit with her so the doc can reassure you.

It’s NEVER safe to have sex without a condom. Then you won’t have to worry about IUD, you’ll have to worry about her getting pregnant.
