Is Global Warming a hoax?

My Christian friend told me that there is no such thing as global warming and that it is just a tool that Al Gore was trying to use to get into power. Is Global Warming a hoax? What would cause global warming?

It just blows me away that people now are finally noticing what is going on this has been going on for years. people have no consideration for each other let alone the environment. it was all about money and more money. Now we are living with the consequences of a people who never thought about nature. and the affects we are having on it. the Seasons have been shigting for years. summer lasts farther into where winter use to be, and winter lasts into spring and so on and so forth. we can panic or we can do something. but we can only control ourselves the big business will keep dumping as long as it makes them money and politicians will keep accepting that money. Golbal warming is a big scare to explain people waist and arrogance. but it sounds good and scares everyone into doing what they want. here in B.C. they are planning to add a carbon tax to the gas. so people will not use their cars so much. that is so bogus its just to get more money for government. I just have to rest in that God is on the throne and he will provide. the world is just coming to an end as we know changes will eventually have to be done, by force if thats the way nature does it.

4/25/08: NPR has an interesting article on global warming… or cooling? The Mystery of Global Warming’s Missing Heat. James Hansen and Al Gore must be so disappointed. NASA is spending around 20 million dollars a year to deploy and monitor 3000 robot buoys around the worlds oceans and the data coming in doesn’t support their theory on global warming, in fact it turns out the world has cooled slightly in the last five years.

Senate report released 12/20/07:

Over 400 prominent scientists from more than two dozen countries recently voiced significant objections to major aspects of the so-called “consensus” on man-made global warming. These scientists, many of whom are current and former participants in the UN IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change), criticized the climate claims made by the UN IPCC and former Vice President Al Gore.

The new report issued by the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee’s office details the views of the scientists, the overwhelming majority of whom spoke out in 2007.

i would really encourage you to read up on this, statistics and studies don’t lie………Christian, Muslim, Jew, Hindu, Jain, Buddhist, Athiest, Agnostic………I don’t care who you are, global warming is for real, think about it this way, y did they think CFCs were bad for Ozone, and what does Ozone layer protect us from? UV rays right? UV rays melt the polar ice caps, and that will eventually lead to massive current changes towards the point of no return, we’ve already seen some little disasters from it, Tsunami in Asia, Hurricane Katrina……….and once you think about them being only the begining of the changes, thats scary…….

Global Warming is a lot older than Al Gore bringing it into light……..scientists have been saying that FOR YEARS……….If I were you I would look at both arguments, but make sure they state Facts not Assumptions and/or Faith……….

good luck, hope this helps

Global warming itself is not a hoax. The earth is getting hotter, not necessarily because of human activity, but because the sun itself is actually getting hotter. It is burning brighter than it did a few hundred years ago. Increasing radiation from the sun is the main reason we have global warming. The whole issue has been overblown and hyped up in order to enforce the carbon tax.

Answer #14

Seeing as how we’re usually drowning in snow and this year we’ve only seen a few flakes… I believe that Global Warming is happening NOW.

Answer #15

No, of course it’s not a hoax, of course it’s real. I repspect Al Gore for what he’s done but it doesn’t help that he’s political - now it just makes it look like a political ploy and everyone who’s not in his party thinks they can ignore him - and if you ignore Global Warming generally then you’re just storing up trouble for the future.

Note to amblessed, whom I respect but really, really disagree with on this one:

Here’s a long quotation from the New Scientist magazine:

“Take the latest claims attributed to Fred Singer… and Dennis Avery from the Hudson Institute, a think tank in Washington DC. They made headlines with their list of 500 scientists who they say have refuted “at least one of the elements of current man-made global warming scares”. The list, says Avery, “makes a mockery of recent claims that a scientific consensus blames humans as the primary cause of global temperature increases since 1850”.

“There is sleight of hand in here, and the words “at least one element” and “since 1850” leave plenty of wriggle room. Sadly, some members of the press have chosen to interpret the release as saying that 500 scientists are “doubtful” that present global warming is down to human activity.

“Now some of the 500 are demanding that their names be removed from the list. Leading the field is Joanna Haigh of Imperial College London, an investigator of possible solar influences on climate via cosmic rays. She says, “I believe that changes in the sun influence climate, but I have never claimed that solar forcing is responsable for recent global warming. It is mendacious of them to include me in a list of those refuting human activity as the major cause.” Another on the list, climatologist Michael Mann of Penn State University, adds: “This is a dishonest and cynical misrepresentation of my findings and views, and those of many of my colleagues.”

So (back to my opinion, not the quotes), we must be very careful how we read these anti-global warming statements, as they appear to be ‘mendacious’, ‘dishonest’, ‘cynical’ and misinterpreted, at least in parts.

I like the way your message starts out, pipet, but I wonder why you end by saying that we should just be resigned to it and it must be God’s will? God is on the throne but he still let us fight WW2 against Hitler, rather than doing it Himself. I reckon that He expects us to be doing something in the battle against Climate Change too.

The Gore movie: A British judge set out nine alleged errors in the film in which statements were made that were not supported by the current mainstream scientific consensus.

ERROR: Mr Gore asserted that a sea-level rise of up to 20 feet would be caused by melting of either West Antarctica or Greenland ‘in the near future’.

The judge said: ‘This is distinctly alarmist and part of Mr Gore’s ‘wake-up call’.

It was common ground that if Greenland melted it would release this amount of water - ‘but only after, and over, millennia.’

ERROR: The film had also asserted that low-lying inhabited Pacific atolls ‘are being inundated because of anthropogenic global warming’ - but there was no evidence of any evacuation having yet happened.

ERROR: The documentary had also spoken of global warming ‘shutting down the Ocean Conveyor’ - the process by which the Gulf Stream is carried over the North Atlantic to western Europe.

The judge said that, according to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), it was ‘very unlikely’ that the Ocean Conveyor, also known as the Meridional Overturning Circulation, would shut down in the future, though it might slow down.

ERROR: Mr Gore had also asserted - by ridiculing the opposite view - that two graphs, one plotting a rise in C02 and the other the rise in temperature over a period of 650,000 years, showed ‘an exact fit’.

The judge said that, although there was general scientific agreement that there was a connection, ‘the two graphs do not establish what Mr Gore asserts’.

ERROR: Mr Gore had asserted that the disappearance of snow on Mt Kilimanjaro was expressly attributable to global warming. The judge said this had ‘specifically impressed’ the Environment Secretary David Miliband.

But the scientific consensus was that it cannot be established that the recession of snows on Mt Kilimanjaro is mainly attributable to human-induced climate change.

ERROR: The drying up of Lake Chad was used in the film as a prime example of a catastrophic result of global warming, said the judge.

‘However, it is generally accepted that the evidence remains insufficient to establish such an attribution.

‘It is apparently considered to be far more likely to result from other factors, such as population increase and over-grazing, and regional climate variability.’

ERROR: Mr Gore ascribes Hurricane Katrina and the consequent devastation in New Orleans to global warming, but there was ‘insufficient evidence to show that’.

ERROR: MR Gore had also referred to a new scientific study showing that, for the first time, polar bears were being found that had actually drowned ‘swimming long distances - up to 60 miles - to find the ice’.

The judge said: ‘The only scientific study that either side before me can find is one which indicates that four polar bears have recently been found drowned because of a storm.’

That was not to say there might not in future be drowning-related deaths of bears if the trend of regression of pack ice continued - ‘but it plainly does not support Mr Gore’s description’.

ERROR: Mr Gore said in the film that coral reefs all over the world were bleaching because of global warming and other factors.

The judge said the IPCC had reported that, if temperatures were to rise by 1-3 degrees centigrade, there would be increased coral bleaching and mortality, unless the coral could adapt.

But separating the impacts of stresses due to climate change from other stresses, such as over-fishing, and pollution was difficult.

A Government spokesperson said it was not proposing to make any further comment on the case at present.

A cardinal in the Catholic Church says the hysteria over man-made climate change is akin to a “new religion” and a symptom of “pagan emptiness.”

Cardinal George Pell of Sydney, Australia, has been the target of criticism in his country for expressing doubts about the validity of man-made global warming.

In an interview that appeared in The Catholic World Report, he said: “Right now, the mass media, politicians, many church figures, and the public generally seem to have embraced even the wilder claims about man-made climate change as if they constituted a new religion.

“These days, for any public figure to question the basis of what amounts to green fundamentalist faith is tantamount to heresy.”

Cardinal Pell called long-term weather forecasting “notoriously imprecise,” and pointed to predictions in the 1970s that the planet was about to enter a new ice age because of global cooling.

He said some of the more “hysterical and extreme” claims about impending climate change “appear symptomatic of a pagan emptiness, of a Western fear when confronted by the immense and basically uncontrollable forces of nature…

“It’s almost as though people without religion, who don’t belong to any of the great religious traditions, have got to be frightened of something. Perhaps they’re looking for a cause that is almost a substitute for religion.”

As for Al Gore’s message of doom about climate change, Cardinal Pell noted that there are “significant errors” in his film “An Inconvenient Truth,” and added: “Few of us have the scientific knowledge to question the wild claims Gore has made — other than some grains of common sense.”

Answer #28

2/18/08: A new report from the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) that reveal that almost all the allegedly “lost” ice has come back. A NOAA report shows that ice levels which had shrunk from 5 million square miles in January 2007 to just 1.5 million square miles in October, are almost back to their original levels. Moreover, a Feb. 18 report in the London Daily Express showed that there is nearly a third more ice in Antarctica than usual. The Daily express recalls the photograph of polar bears clinging on to a melting iceberg which has been widely hailed as proof of the need to fight climate change and has been used by former Vice President Al Gore during his “Inconvenient Truth” lectures about mankind’s alleged impact on the global climate. Gore fails to mention that the photograph was taken in the month of August when melting is normal. Or that the polar bear population has soared in recent years.
