Magazine company keeps saying that I owe them money?

Ok I got a little problem I’ve been getting these notices from this magazines I used to read I’m not gonna say what kind they are so please don’t ask. Any way they keep telling me I own them money which I don’t because I never asked to have my subcription renewed but for some reason they think I did. Now I’m getting a notice in the mail every two to three weeks saying I owed them money, now the editor in chief is telling me to send him a check which I don’t have because I don’t own a checking account. I feel like I’m being ripped off for something I never asked for. How do I get these guy’s to realize I don’t want their magazines. I’ve tried countless times not sending money but their still not getting the message.

Answer #1

Yeah… the reason they keep sending copies without getting paid, is that for a certain number of months (3 to 6) they’re allowed to claim those as “paid readers” for their advertisers. And advertisers pay more for paid readers than they do for free readers.

Answer #2

Thanks pinkpearl that’s the same thing I was thinking. My sister went though a similar thing a few years ago when she kept getting the Rolling Stones magazines which she never paid for and they kept sending notice after notice saying she owed them money, They finally stoped after six months.

Answer #3

Ignore them completely. They will eventually stop… magazines sent countless renewal notices out, and you are not legally bound. Even if you do say you want to renew, and they invoice you, and you don’t pay the invoice, they will just cut you off eventually (usually after 3 months) and cut their losses. Magazines sometimes send their nonpays to a collection agency but it’s not typical.

Edited to add: They’re also using scare tactics by signing it “editor-in-chief” and by saying that they’re holding the next issue for you. It’s all done by computers, in bulk – you are one of 50,000 who probably got the same message.

Answer #4

I never got them they told me one time last month or so they were holding the issue that was suppose to be mailed. Since I never sent them money I don’t understand why they would think I would want them.

Answer #5

You need to call them and tell them… They’re not going to get the message by you avoiding the problem. That’s not how collection calls stop. And if you were getting the magazines but didnt order them, why didnt you call them? Either way, you need to call them now and talk to them.

Answer #6

k you can’t keep avoiding it. You need to call them and tell them that you didnt want a subscription have an adult call and pretend that theyre your parent. Have them tell them that you were a minor at the time and therefore cannot be held responsible. With some work they should drop it. But you need to call! They will never let go of it and keep adding late fees if you don’t do something about it. At the worst, you’ll need to pay it, if not they will send you to collections and you’ll mess up your credit which is a huge no no!

Well I’ll guess I wait it out and see what happens. :)
