My dog is in heat and she isn’t even a year old yet. About how long will this last? And since she has been in heat she has been throwing up a lot is that common for her to do while in heat?

Listen to ultraviolet. I am just going to add a few things. I work at a vet hospital so take my info as you wish. I also breed chihuahua’s. My female have never thrown up during her heat. It last 3 weeks you can look the up on the internet. the four peirods. Proestrus- bloody vaginal discharge and vaulva is swollen. ESTRUS- the female will accept the dog during estrus ( also known as heat) Ovulation usually occours during the first 48 hrs. DIETRUS– this period follow estrus and usually lasts 60-90 days, during this time the female’s reproductive tract is under control of progesterone. ( a hormone produced by ovaries. ANESTRUS– this a quiet period that follows diestrus, when there’s no activity in the female’s reproductive system. If fertilization has taken place, diestrus is longer and anestrus is skipped. A dog can go into heat every 6 to 9 months depending on size. My chihuahua went 9 months before second heat. As far as the vomiting I would call a vet. May be secondary but I have never heard of that.

Oh yeah and everyone is quick to say get her spayed because of unwanted puppies. However if you are not planning of breeding her, getting her spayd also decreases the chance of many different types of cancer in the future.

a dog goes into heat every 6 months. it last for bout 2 weeks but we but a diaper on my dog so blood doesnt get every where. they do have special dog diapers lol

Answer #4

You really should spay her, there are places that will do it low cost (for like $20-30 or so) your vet’s bill is probably going to be a lot higher…

here’s a list of places that do it for low cost, www. saveourstrays.com/low-costsn.htm

Answer #5

Female dogs can go into heat at 6 months old so ago doesn’t matter. It usually lasts a whole month she will go into heat every 6 or 7 or 8 months. If you don’t want her to have puppies you should spay her asap it will cost usually an extra $25 if you want to get her spayed asap while shes in heat or you can wait until it’s over but make sure you watch her at all times so she doesn’t get with the neighbors dog. The throwing up I think you need to call a vet & ask them about that I’ve never heard that before. If you need more info funmail me or leave me a comment Have a nice day :)

Answer #8

my chihuahua’s in heat, she started vomiting excessivly so I rushed her to the vet, they gave her 2 shots, and some meds to go home on, and he explained to me that they can get sick when they have a heat cycle, exspecially later in age, she is 5 now. So we went home, she was fine for 2 days, and it all started over, I rushed her to the vet again, this time she was dehydrated and they kept her over night with I’ve fluids and medication, she’s now been home since yesterday morning, was doing great and now late at night she’s started vomiting and hardly moving around much at all! Im so worried, the vet seems to think its all the heat cycle, but im not so sure, rest assured if she makes it through this I am definately having her spayed.
