How long will it take for my chihuahua to go into heat?

How long will it take my chihuahua to go into heat again after her puppies are born? Is it 6 months from her last heat or 6 months from when the puppies are born? We need to get the stud out of the house so that there are no “surprises”!

Answer #1

hello it is 6 months after the pups are born give or take a few days.

I used to breed Chihuahuas, so I’ll try to explain it as best as I can. A Chihuahua normally goes into heat every 6 months. If a Chihuahua is in heat and becomes pregnant, she is pregnant for 2 months. Once she has her puppies, it will be about 4 months after she delivers, that she will go into heat again. 2 months + 4 months = 6 months, from the time she was last in heat! I hope that is not too confusing! Make sure that you have a vet standing by, just in case your Chihuahua has complications and you need to take her in for a C-Section or you need some help once your female starts whelping (delivering) her puppies. Chihuahuas are known to have complications so do not leave her alone. Once the puppies are born, you need to make sure that you take the mother and the puppies to the vet and have them all checked to make sure that they are all ok, within the first 24-48 hours after the puppies are born! That is very important! When I was breeding my Chihuahuas, who all now Spayed and Neutered, I never had to bring any of my females in for a C-Section, I never lost any of my females and I never lost any of the puppies but I knew exactly what I was doing. If you personally have never bred Chihuahuas before and your female has complications that you don’t know how to assist with or handle the situation, remember that your female and her puppies can die, if you don’t take action and get a vets help fast enough. I would recommend highly that you take your Chi to the vet if you haven’t already and have her x-rayed. That way you will know how many puppies she is carrying, how big the puppies are and if she will be able to deliver the puppies herself or need a C-Section because they may be too large for her to deliver on her own and an approximate due date! Good Luck! I hope everything goes smoothly and she has as safe delivery!
