FBI obtained phone records against policy, and tried to cover it up

So the very least that the FBI has done is obtained phone records without proper internal justification. And, potentially, it was illegally obtaining phone records.

Why is this kind of thing not bigger news? The government (Federal) massively abusing it’s powers…has been since 2001 & the patriot act and yet, I haven’t seen massive “impeach him NOW” parties anywhere in my neighborhood.

Dick Cheney even shot somebody. OR am I wrong, and the US government is doing a great job?

Answer #1

We are powerless slaves of the empire. The land of liberty was destroyed by Lincoln over 100 years ago.

Answer #2

I quote actually goes like this “Any society that would give up a little libery to gain a little security will deserve neither and lose both”. This happens to be my favorite quote of all time and I try to let it guide me in politics. I’ve been using it in the 9/11 example for a long time, so go Jimahl.

Semi1900,

You’re right. Congress shouldn’t get a free pass either. They are also accountable to the people and I don’t think they’ve done a great job.

Yet and still, I would never trade in our democratic republic for any other kind of system.

Answer #4

“I believe the biggest problem with our current administration is that it feels it doesn’t have to answer to anyone - particularly the American people.”

Bush may not feel he has to answer to the American people, but many of the problems in this country right now were the result of things that Congress either let him do, or things they did themselves. The Patriot Act went through without any debate. The Iraq War and tax cuts for the rich both needed Congressional approval, and got it.

People complain about the loss of our freedoms and the sad state of affairs in the country right now and then point the finger at Bush. I have absolutely no love for him either, but Congress should shoulder just as much, if not more, of the blame.

Answer #5

The current congress has been in session for only a little more than a year, and the dems have only a slight edge over the reps. The prior congress was controlled by the republicans. Yes, that congress gave Bush everything he asked for. There was some debate, it is just that the corporate controlled media didn’t pay attention. However, there were plenty of dems who went along too. The next administration will have a much larger dem majority to deal with.

Answer #6

Piker put very well. There is a complacency and apathy occuring in this country that prevents people from seeing what is really going on. It has been encoraged by the corporate controlled media in order to keep people either afraid or disinterested.

The theft of our rights has been extremely incremental. And they used the horrible tragedy of 9/11 to scare people into believing it was alright to give up certain rights.

As Ben Frankiln said: Those who would give up a freedom in exchange for security deserve neither.

Answer #7

lol, I laughed my as* off when Cheney did that, and he didn’t even get a sobriety test till the next day. But ya, the government has been slowley creating a death grip around the American people. As long as its gradual and over a period of time the people havn’t really noticed. But honestly, who does the government have to answer to, it use to be the American people, but thats not the case anymore. It seems like we have given up, the government use to fear the us, and they knew better than to abuse their power. When was the last riot over any of this stuff, when was the last nation wide protest, Those two things are the only language the government listens to. The death grip is just going to keep getting worse until we as a people unite and say, thats enough. because if we don’t there just going to keep pushing their limits until they have complete control. The more control the government has over the people, the more power politicians have, its human nature to crave power. How many people did it take to start a war on Iraq, and how much money did they gain by it

Answer #8

GO JIMAHL …

I’ve been saying that Franklin quote for years once it became obvious that the Bush-whacking administration was trying to take away liberties in the name of fear.

That’s why WE MUST GET ALL BUSHIES OUT OF OUR GOVERNMENT. And that will only happen if we ALL go the the polls and VOTE THEM OUT.

Good Luck America!!

Answer #9

I believe the biggest problem with our current administration is that it feels it doesn’t have to answer to anyone - particularly the American people. This attitude appears to have filtered down and is disastrous to liberty and democracy.

This is not to imply that all of America is bad but to point out that there is a problem that needs to be addressed.
