What is the difference between England and Great Britain?

In Great Britain is an island. England is a country on that Island. England is politically part of the United Kingdom.

The United Kingdom consists of four countries, three of them are on Great Britain (England, Scotland and Wales) and the last one (Northern Ireland) is on the island of Ireland. On the Island of Ireland, there is another sovereign state that does not belong to the UK, that is the Republic of Ireland.

Great Britain - Great Britain is the name of the island northwest of France and east of Ireland that consists of three somewhat autonomous regions: England, Wales and Scotland.

England - England is part of Great Britain, which is part of the United Kingdom. England, Wales, Scotland, and Northern Ireland are not independent countries but the United Kingdom is. The remaining portion of the island of Ireland (that which is not the U.K.’s Northern Ireland) is an independent country called the Republic of Ireland (Eire).
