What do I do for a constipated newborn?

What do I do for a constipated newborn? The pediatrician told me to give her one ounce of pedialite so I did that. It didn’t help. Any thing else that will work??

I used to work at a pharmacy, but not in the pharmacy area; just the store. anyway, there are some laxatives out there for toddlers, but I’m not sure if they are recommended for infants/newborns. my suggestion is to go to your local pharmacy, and ask your pharmacist about these (especially if you doctor is not calling you back :O ) hope they are helpful and I hope this was helpful. hope she gets better.

Both of my sons where constipated as infants. They are now 9 and 5. My peditrician told me to use dark karo syrup, put 1 teaspoon in each bottle. Also I would sneak in a water bottle w/ a tsp. of dark Karo at some point thru out the day. The dark karo syrup softens the stool this way it is easier to pass. Babies could become dependant on the supositories - I would not recomend using them. Prune juice is also good - although it made my second son gassy. Both of my boys were on the Karo until they switched to cows milk. Hope this helps you! Good Luck.

I wouldn’t suggest going to the hospital because there are so many other sicknesses you or your baby can pick up while there. things much more serious than constipation!! I would suggest some apple juice diluted with water or even a lil prune juice with water once or twice a day!

I agree with bimjob. Call the doctor and tell him/her that it hasn’t worked and ask about what else you should try.

Congrats! And Good Luck.

I have a new born too and we went to the hospital saturday, the doctor said the same thing but youhave to give the baby 2 ounces 1 to 2 times a day.

Answer #6

We had this issue with our baby, and the doctor prescribed some other things (suppository if it gets serious, etc)…you do need a new doctor. A lot of community clinics will have an “ask a nurse” line that you can call. I remember using the one from our local clinic at least once every three weeks for my first son.

Answer #7

First of all congratulations on your newborn. I know how precious a baby is.

You need to contact the doctor on this one. Please do not try to guess. Your baby’s health is too important.

Good Luck and good health to you and your baby.

Answer #8

if your doctors being a dink you can bring the lil baby to the hospital their are infant massages that I learned about that are suposta help but its mostly for gas where you rub their belly down on the right hand side in a straight line then like an upside down L then like an upside down you its suposta b I love you thing or whatever its good if they need to fart

Answer #9

When this would happen to my daughter, I was told to start by putting petroleum jelly on a thermometer and put just the tip of it up her little bum. But be sure to put a mat under your baby while you do it because sometimes it can cause a bowel movement. When that wouldn’t work I gave her a half ounce of baby apple juice mixed with a half ounce of water. Also massage their butt cheeks. I know it sounds weird but it worked for me. If that all fails I would call the doctor.

Answer #10

I tried that. he never called me back. I think I need a new doctor.
