should I get a new cockatiel?

okay so I have had a cockatiel for a year and I really love him. my mom says that I don’t care for him enough yadda yadda yadda! so I am looking for a solution and I think I have a good one but I need to know if it will work. me and my cockatiel have “bonded” and we are thoroughly attached to each other. well one of my friends came up with the idea of getting another bird! I just want to know that if I get another bird will the one I have now start to like the new one better than me? do you think that it will keep him from screaming if I get another? also, if I do get another how would I introduce it to my bird that I have now? thanks.

I don’t get it… your mom thinks that you don’t care for your cockatiel enough so your solution is to get another one?? How does that work? lol

Anyway yes, in most cases when you introduce a partner to your single bird, your cockatiel will bond less with you to bond with its new cockatiel partner. It will act more ‘bird-like’ than ‘human-like’, if you get what I mean. Given the choice, they usually pick their own kind than people to hang out with.

It’ll take you lots of time and patience to try to get your old and new cockatiel to be your bosom buddies again. It might be harder if the newer one is wilder and less tame.

No, it won’t stop the screaming, you’ll probably get an extra screamer.

Your current pet might be used to having its own cage, so it’s not a good idea to immediately put the new guy in. Keep them in separate cages, and initially keep them at a distance from each other, but they should be able to see and talk to each other. Over a week or so, you can slowly put their cages closer to each other until they are practically next to each other so that their beaks can touch through the cage, but they can still have their own space if they ‘argue’. Then if they seem to get along, you can put them in the same cage. Make sure the cage is big enough for the both of them (be able to fly a little, stretch their wings, etc) if they are not allowed outside the cage.

Also, you’d be better off to get a partner of the opposite sex. Two females might be ok, but two males might not. Ask your pet shop or local breeder for more information.
