No, don’t try to take a knife of any kind on board with you. Just pack it in your luggage.

I used to have this neat multi-tool shaped like a key that I forgot to take off my keyring and they even caught that.

According to a news item on NPS ffrom December 22, 2005, you actually can. Of course, you could not have from the resumption of flights after 9/11/01 until 12/22/05. And I haven’t tried it since then. Check out the interview with TSA director Kip Hawley:
