Why do people bother to question leaders?

ahem well mary thats a fine question… allow me to answer…

because you are expected to step aside and join in the american stupor… pretty un-american actually… they throw all kinds of entertainments at us instead of keeping music and culture in our fibers… that way we wont get in the way of ‘important business’ that is government guaranteed to be of ‘little significance’…

what kind of business you ask? well you dont ask those kind of questions! geez know your role ya turkey!

Marketing is everything.

Everything has to be sold, our revolutionary war was largely sold to the rest of us by a few wealthy folks who weren’t fond of their profits being split with Great Brittan.

Durring the red scare corporations sold us on the idea that Communism is the greatest evil and the biggest threat to our way of life when in fact it was the biggest threat to the way of life of corporations. We imagined communism to be this spreading cancer that must be snuffed out everywhere it arose rather than an economic ideology. Quickly communism was talked vis-a-vis Democracy and vis-a-vis Christianity.

Our administration was trying to think of a way to “sell” a war with Iraq to the American people then 9/11 happened. Now we have a casus bellum. It didn’t even mater that Iraq had nothing to do with 9/11, that Iraq posed no real threat to the US, and that invading a country like Iraq would be astounding expensive the administration found a way to sell a war with Iraq to the American people.

There are those who believe that Democracy is impossible because once the citizens realize that they can vote themself big entitlements they will bankrupt the nation. There are those who believe that Democracy is impossible because it degrades into plutocracy, oligarchy, and kleptocrachy. What we have really degraded into is rule by the marketers. We buy what our leaders sell us.

You asked “Why do people bother to question leaders?” but you answered “Why don’t leaders listen when we question them?”

Regardless, any political system is going to be frustrating from time to time, and there’s never going to be a form of government that appeals to all people all the time, but taken as a whole, despite its many, many faults, the democratic republic works about as well as you could hope.

The political machine is extremely slow to change, but at least change is possible. We change our own Constitution fairly frequently, all things considered. Our civil rights are taking a beating lately, but the ability to petulantly howl to the press about wiretaps and the torture of foreign combatants is a lot better than sitting at home waiting for your neighbor to rat you out to the secret police for complaining about the government.

I’m the last person (the VERY last) who will get up and stand in the jingoist “America number one, ra ra ra” line, but I also despise the notion that there is a vast national conspiracy to keep the populace complacent and obedient. Elected officials are brought to their knees far too often for that to be the case, and most things that can be pointed to as examples of swollen, bloated political corruption are just examples of people who aren’t very good at running a country. MTV isn’t there to keep you chained to the plow. It’s there to sell lip gloss.
