Why be homophobic?

so there, it’s been asked WHY? now, you must know, I’m completly straight and know it in me that I am. but I’m cool with LGBTs (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transexual) I’m curently talking about homophobia in the childhood life in my Children Studies course at uni and have been moved by the many stories I’ve been reading for this unit. during my readings, many questions have occured to me. you don’t need to answer them all, but here it goes:

  1. Why is it seen in society that lesbians are “more ok” but gays are not?

  2. Why is it that eventhough hollywood is steping up to LGBT rights and putting it out there, they aren’t fully doing so?

a) they mostly have straight people play the role of the “gay guy”

b) they “over steriotype” LGBTs

3.why is it that it’s more “normal” for white non religious people to be LGBT but not normal for religious/people of color to be LGBT?

  1. I feel that being LGBT isn’t by nurture, but more by nature. how about you?

  2. FOR THOSE WHO ARE STRAIGHT! have you ever questioned your sexual orientation/experimented with your feelings on the same sex?

Answer #1
  1. Why is it seen in society that lesbians are more ok but gays are not? We live in a world that has historically been controlled by men. Men made the laws, men were the politicians, men went to war…men decided what was appropriate sex and what was not…men dominated women…and only dominated other men on the battle field, in work, in public office, etc…areas where women were not allowed. Women were thought to be placed here to serve and entertain men…men were comfortable with the thought of two women ‘performing’ for their pleasure…as long as men believed the women are just ‘performing’ they are fine with it…just as they are fine with it if it is two, beautiful, sexy women…two unattractive women…well that just drives home the point that men might not be as important as they think and threatens their manhood…just as the thought of two men together threatens them.

  2. Why is it that eventhough hollywood is steping up to LGBT rights and putting it out there, they aren’t fully doing so? Hollywood is about entertainment and making money…if there were mostly LGBT purchasing tickets instead of straight people…the movies would be realistic looks at LGBT relationships. It is about the bottom line…period.

a) they mostly have straight people play the role of the gay guy Again…it is hollywood…it is about the bottom line…money.

b) they over steriotype LGBTs Hollywood is about entertainment…what sells…they ALWAYS over do it…african americans, jews, gays, latinos…are all portrayed over the top.

3.why is it that it’s more normal for white non religious people to be LGBT but not normal for religious/people of color to be LGBT? What is normal? And religion can be a straight jacket…no matter the faith…no matter the race…no matter the gender.

  1. I feel that being LGBT isn’t by nurture, but more by nature. how about you? I did not choose to be straight…why would anyone think that anyone else chooses their sexual preference.

  2. FOR THOSE WHO ARE STRAIGHT! have you ever questioned your sexual orientation/experimented with your feelings on the same sex? Sure…I believe most young girls experiment.

Why is it seen in society that lesbians are more ok but gays are not?

Where’s your proof of this? It’s my understanding that women in general are having problems finding inequality, so wouldn’t that make a lesbian even MORE unequal? It’s called Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transexual for a reason. It includes all forms of what’s considered sexual deviation.

Why is it that eventhough hollywood is steping up to LGBT rights and putting it out there, they aren’t fully doing so?

What does this even mean? How is it Hollywood’s job to advocate for gays? I think everyone is doing their part as much as they can.

they mostly have straight people play the role of the gay guy

They also have gay guys play straight men. Neil Patrick Harris is a publicly gay man but the character he plays on How I Met Your Mother is exceedingly straight.

they over stereotype LGBT’s

How is that? How can something be OVER stereotyped, I think any amount of it is too much. Provide some proof.

why is it that it’s more normal for white non religious people to be LGBT but not normal for religious/people of color to be LGBT?

There are just as many people of color who are gay than white people. Wanda Sykes is one example. And of course you wouldn’t know of any religious gays. Chances are their religion finds that behavior as taboo, so either they’re not very religious, or they’re afraid to come out. Just because you don’t know of many colored or religious gays, doesn’t mean there aren’t any.

I think if you’re going to make an argument, even for something I agree with, you should consider both sides. You don’t have hardly any proof for the conclusions you’ve come to, and you’re not doing the LGBT’s any favors by misrepresenting them.

  1. Society wise, lesbians are not more okay then gays are. Where did you get this? Guys prefer lesbians and that seems to be giving you the notion that lesbians are more accepted – there not, I have a lesbian sister and she doesn’t go flaunting her lesbian side to everyone because she knows people have something against it. Then you have the transsexuals. If you really want to know more about that then take a look at this question

http://www.funadvice.com/q/what_does_the_bible_say_about_transsexuals

  1. Hollywood isn’t in charge of that. Where did you get this idea from? You really think Hollywood is going to do something about the people that advocate that being lesbian, gay, tran, bi is going to get you a one way ticket to hell? Like advocate pointed out, people are doing all they can for homosexuals and transsexuals to have rights.

a) I agree with advocate :)

b) stereotyping is enough damage as it is. Doesn’t matter the quantity of it.

  1. Just to point out, my sister is a catholic and she still is even though she is a lesbian. Its not normal normality doesn’t even apply to this? Your referring to it being more common. The reason being as advocate pointed out is that they’re scared to come out of their religion for fears that the religious followers will damn them to hell or they will go to hell for simply leaving. Or they simply aren’t that religious.

4.Okay let me rephrase I read the question totally wrong it is by nature :). Mikeh ( a fellow advisor) pointed out that homosexuality is in fact caused by genetics. He pointed out that the surroundings in which the individual is in will affect the openness that they have about it and what the individual considers normal/abnormal. A persons sexual orientation isn’t decided by surroundings.

  1. I have questioned it before, personally I feel that I am straight and I have no problems with homosexuals and transsexuals alike.

I hope this helps and please don’t get the wrong idea. I’m not bashing on you or anything

Answer #4
  1. Lesbians are less offensively obvious, compared to exhibitionist male homosexuals
  2. There is a macho culture behind Hollywood a) they want to represent homosexuals according to a certain stereotype b) they want to give homosexuals and lesbians a certain image
  3. Coloured people do not so easily identify with Hellenic prototypes of intellectual homosexuality and lesbianism. And religion bans the practice as an abomination.
  4. On the whole some open homosexuals and lesbians must have marked tendencies to develope that way.
  5. Deviation can be developed in any individual

Problems like this create war:( Война это плохо: war is bad!

Answer #6
  1. because people see two girls making out more attractive then two guys.. and its all about them so.

2)because evryone in hollywood is fake and they just want more fame so they pose to be these good sameritans that care sooo much when in reality its all about money.

  1. im not sure if I understand what your sayin about the colord part.. but as far as the religion part, its pretty simple” gay people will go to hell”

  2. in a sence I beleive its both because when your a baby your absorbing everything and if your in a home where its accepted or considered normal, you might end up gay, on the other hand, you see these kids who grow up in homes where its completly unexceptable yet they cant help the fact that there attracted to the same sex.

Answer #7
  1. because the general streotype of gay guys is mostly very far from the reality. not all of them are suburban and have a little asian baby. so if I were gay and I had to play a gay guy that isnt me, or what everyone thinks of me/ an overplayed outdated stereotype of me, I would be mad. and turn down the roles. so I think its just a shortage in gay guys willing to demean themselves :P
Answer #8

(1. I feel very strongly that it is a little more acceptable for lesbians because it is less “grotesque” what they do sexually compared to guys. (2. I feel that it isn’t natural to be gay lesbian trans or bi because god gave man woman so they could be together. Adam wasn’t asking god for another man, and eve wasn’t asking god to create another women. (3. a lot of people that are gay lesbian bi or trans like to PUBLICLY show their proud to be that way; this a very wrong thing to do for anyone straight or not! I went to a baseball game and in the front row of the stands was 2 gay men making out! I almost threw up! I could maybe be ok with it if they were doing it in private but at a baseball game! There are children their for peres sake! Me being one of them!!! I find that just super repulsive, and I think most kids my age do!

  1. Why is it seen in society that lesbians are more ok but gays are not?

That really does appear to be true in the wider society. And I’m thinking it leads down the path to gender roles. When a guy is with another guy, it is somehow emasculating, he’s not being a real guy. And this is a lot worse than not being a real girl. It is the same reason women can pass in traditional guy clothes but men are absolutely forbidden from wearing traditional women’s clothes. Also, really a lot of men think lesbians arent really lesbians. They’re just waiting for the right guy to show up. They’re not too fond of actual lesbians.

  1. Why is it that eventhough hollywood is steping up to LGBT rights and putting it out there, they aren’t fully doing so?

Because it isnt popular to do so?

3.why is it that it’s more normal for white non religious people to be LGBT but not normal for religious/people of color to be LGBT?

It isnt about normality. You have to understand that not only does it tend to be even more taboo among most minority cultures, it also adds another burden of another minority status. Being gay is one minority, being gay and of an ethnic minority adds to the minority status. Thus it is isnt that they dont exist, but that they are more hidden.

  1. I feel that being LGBT isn’t by nurture, but more by nature. how about you? Given that the last thing I expected to be was gay, uhm I’m going with genetics on this one. So I agree with you. It couldnt have been nurture, as far as my environment went, gay people dont exist.

  1. Why is it seen in society that lesbians are more ok but gays are not?
  • in my country, its more common to see lesbians showing the public their relationship than gay guys doing so. its probably because people are still kind of ‘put off’ when they see men being sweet to each other.
  1. Why is it that eventhough hollywood is steping up to LGBT rights and putting it out there, they aren’t fully doing so?
  • because not everyone in hollywood is lgbt. only those who are lgbt truly understands their own issues. and hollywood films/tv series are exaggerated. they are not a reflection of reality.

3.why is it that it’s more normal for white non religious people to be LGBT but not normal for religious/people of color to be LGBT?

  • I dont know, im asian.
  1. I feel that being LGBT isn’t by nurture, but more by nature. how about you?
  • some are by nature, some are by nurture. A lot of my gay friends have been gay since they were young while some have homosexual tendencies when they were younger but these were nurtured more in some more conducive environments.
  1. FOR THOSE WHO ARE STRAIGHT! have you ever questioned your sexual orientation/experimented with your feelings on the same sex?
  • I was often mistaken for a lesbian probably because Im single and Im straightforward. I kind of had a self-reflection before if I was indeed a lesbian, and no. im not. haha I like guys. I am not sure if I will be attracted to girls. but im open to it if ever I’ll be attracted to either gender. but for now, I believe I am straight.
Answer #11

I’m only going to address the first question:

* 1. Why is it seen in society that lesbians are more ok but gays are not?

To the extent that’s true, it may be biological. Scientific American just came out with a study that monitored the arousal area of the brain, and it found that bisexual females show fundamental arousal at images of both men and women. Bisexual men show such low level arousal at only males or only females…I.e., male bisexuality (but not homosexuality) may be a learned trait.

I’m not sure how that relates to biological perceptions of homosexuality, but it seems like it might.
