I think it is a poem about hope, that is compared through the metaphor of the bird. If hope is a bird then it sits in us all, constantly singing and is there through the hard times, always there to give us hope.

A bird is covered in feathers and can handle the storms, cold and extremes, and this is like hope, it will be constantly singing in your soul. With out asking a crumb of me, meaning that it never expects anything from us, it just is.
