What is the best way to stop a dog from pottying in the house?

My darn dogs are a lil over a year old and no matter how many times we take them outside they still leave us “presents” around the house. We tried to crate them for 6-8 months and the dumbasses used the bathroom in those non stop too. we rub noses in the mess an put em outside or reward them when they potty outside. We are about to buy our first house and we have to figure somethin out so they dont destroy our new home.

This was written for young pups, but the same rules apply for older pups…DO NOT RUB THEIR NOSES IN IT…all you get is a confused SCARED pup…My guess is that you give them the run of the house, also…buy some baby gates, and keep them confined in the same room as you are in.

HOUSEBREAKING…

The number one ingredient to have a house trained dog is…VIGILANCE. You must make housetraining your ‘mission in life’ for anywhere from 10 days to two weeks.

Keep slip-on’s by the back door, and a bathrobe or something quick to get into handy…because for this two weeks…housetraining will be your mission. Your goal is…to beat the puppy to the punch…You’ll learn his signals just by doing all that vigilance…like they’ll start sniffing, and circling…you pick him up and take him out BEFORE he goes…Rules of thumb are also…For puppies, take him out immediately when he wakes up (do not let him follow you to the door…pick him up and carry out the door)…take out immediately after eating. During play a little puppy should be taken out every 20 minutes or so (aren’t you glad they sleep so much?? )

Crate the pup when EVER you cannot watch it (when you leave, or are ultra busy)…instinct is for them to not dirty their nest…so make sure the crate is only big enough to stand up, turn around, etc…A new puppy will need to get out once during the night…but that only lasts a week or so…You don’t want the puppy having to go so bad he dirties his nest…you do NOT want to break that instinctive barrier…once that’s happened it’s hard to undo.

When you get the pup outside…repeatedly say ‘pee pee’ or go pee…then love them up BIG when they go…this will eventually get them to go on command, and save you from having hang out and wait in the future. DO NOT bring him in until he goes…plan on cooling your heels in the beginning.

Make a promise to yourself and to your pup…there will be no punishment for accidents. If the puppy does pee or poop in the house…roll up a newspaper, and hit YOURSELF in the head, repeating the words…I didn’t watch my puppy…

take him outside every 15 mins for 2 weeks and they will stop using the bathroom all the time in the house and when you leave put him in a kenal

Answer #3

Its not good to rub their noses in! I dont do anything but what you cant try is everytime they start to sniff around the houes talk them out and when they go potty out side say pee or go potty they will catch on.

                      hope this helps:)

Take them outside every time that they see like they want to go to the bathroom and all, meaby taking them to training can be an option, meaby taking them every sertain hours so they know when it’s their time and also realize that it’s outside…

GOOD LUCK:)

Maybe your dogs are what people call “outside” dogs and need to stay outside? Could the problem be lack of a regular bathroom break like let them out every other hour and only let them in if they go? You could try to set up a doggy pad in the house its like a scented mat for puppy training. good luck

the reason they are probably usin the bathroom in the crate is because its 2 big. the crate is only supposed 2 b big enough 4 them 2 tunr stand up and turn around in and thts all. if its 2 big then they have sum room 2 use the bathroom in a corner or sumtin and then go lay on the other side of the crate but if it is where they can only stand up and turn around in then they have no room 2 use the bathroom in the corner and of they do use the bathroom then they will have 2 lay in it and then they will not want that and they will stop usin the bathroom in the crate hope I helpd lil bit =)

My sister read that dogs do not like to go to the bathroom near where they eat, so, if the dog has an accident, you should clean it up (preferably with a product designed specifically for animals) and place a small amount of food in a little bowl right on top of the spot. Yes, you will have bowls everywhere for a while, but, if you also follow the information from phrannie’s post (above), you will soon have a housebroken dog! It worked perfectly for my sister.
