What does 'Typical white person' mean ?

Obama said his grandmother was a ‘Typical white person’ - What does that phrase mean ?

Answer #1

Observation: Obama did not say ‘in her day she was a typical white person’.

Answer #2

I am sorry amblessed, but you are clearly grabbing at straws.

“In his speech on race, Obama sought to evoke sympathy for Wright. He described a “lack of economic opportunity among black men, and the shame and frustration that came from not being able to provide for one’s family…” “

What makes you think he was trying to evoke sympathy? He was simply explaining his experiences to give a better understanding of his mindset.

“Obama said this was “the reality in which Rev. Wright and other African-Americans of his generation grew up. They came of age in the late fifties and early sixties, a time when segregation was still the law of the land and opportunity was systematically constricted…Even for those blacks who did make it, questions of race, and racism, continue to define their worldview in fundamental ways. For the men and women of Rev. Wright’s generation, the memories of humiliation and doubt and fear have not gone away; nor has the anger and the bitterness of those years.”

In retirement, Wright will continue a life of privilege that dates back to Central High. As a retirement gift, Wright’s Trinity United Church of Christ is building him a million-dollar home abutting Odyssey Country Club and Golf Course in the nearly all-white Chicago suburb of Tinley Park. The home sits on land the pastor purchased in 2004 for $345,000. In December 2006, Wright sold the land to his church, which took out a $1.6 million mortgage on the property. In April 2007, the church applied for a building permit for the brick and stone structure. “

Obama never said that Wright was poor, or not successful in life. You even quote him saying: “Even for those blacks who did make it, questions of race, and racism, continue to define their worldview in fundamental ways.” The numbers you are talking about here are hardly significant? Are you this critcal of republican excesses?

Wright still did much good in his life, a fact that you seem to completely ignore. You only want to focus on some stupid coment that most people really don’t care about. Only zealots like you care about such nonsense.

“Wright’s new home has 10,340 square feet of space, about four times the size of a typical suburban house. It includes four bedrooms, an elevator, an exercise room, and a four-car garage. “

Who cares. How does that have any affect on Obama’s ability to lead?

“Rather than being a victim of oppression of blacks, as Obama has claimed, Wright is a symbol of the American dream ! “

Just because one overcomes oppression does not mean that one never experienced it. Colin Powell did, and he overcame it. He even benefitted from affirmative action.

Your constant attempts to bring attention to Obama’s race makes me think you have some deep seated issues about race. Doesn’t sound like a very christian attitude to me.

Answer #3

amblessed, congratulations, you must be very proud.

He came to that conclusion because Wright has re-emerged and shown some really bad judgement. But he is a preacher, not a politician.

Obama never defended anything Wright said. On the contrary, he has stated unequivocally that he disagreed with his statements and views. Before Wright’s latest speeches, they were only sound bites from church sermons. Now he is saying some of those things on a national stage, so of course Obama is going to completely renownce it. Wright’s actions of late have been very egocentric, and has no doubt hurt Obama. But Obama has handled all of this very well, and this too shall pass.

Answer #4

Well I have no idea but I would love to know., im staying tuned to this one lol. Mel x

Answer #5

yes, but he did say ‘was’ if your biased in your opinion on this one amblessed, you can look at it as being racist however if you look at it for what it truly means and looking for the point he wanted to get across without trying to bash him for something he was saying that his grandma was a typical white person he used the word ‘was’ as a past tense of be or is, therefore it must have been in her day is he used a past tense and we all know when it comes to discrimination, especially against race and religious people, they get you while your young so you live your whole life fighting for their cause so obamas grandma was against blacks when she was raised, before the civil rights movement, then she grew up through the movement, but had a hard time adjusting to the new society, just like typical white people in those days, like the governer george wallace

Answer #6

He may be right. I can’t see any other reason why she is still staying in.

Answer #7

I imagine he meant relatively little by it and we shouldn’t over-analyse it! He probably did mean that his grandmother didn’t expect her daughter to marry an African… That must have been fairly ‘non-typical’ in that time and place.

Answer #8

What he said is idiotic. His comment is an example of reverse racism. How would someone who defends his comments if someone said “Obama is typical black person.” That’s what I have to say.

Answer #9

I thought it just ment a normal white person

Answer #10

4/29/08: FINALLY, Barak ‘I can no more disown Rev. Wright than the black community’ Obama, has had a sudden change - people I know came to that very same conclusion (Wright is wrong) a very long time ago - just 48 hrs ago he was defending Rev. Wright - today the sudden change - some chickens have apparently come home to Roost !

Answer #11

I think what he meant by that was that she was prejudice because she didnt live around black people. He was speaking from his experience of living in a place where racism obviously went on.

Answer #12

well obama used it when saying his g-ma was against blacks, like a ‘typical white person’ but his grandma was raised before the civil rights movement when racist behavior against blacks was seen as ‘typical’

Answer #13

4/26/08: House Majority Whip James Clyburn, the highest-ranking African-American in the Congress, says blacks believe Hillary Clinton is staying in the presidential race to drag down Barack Obama so John McCain will win the White House — and she can run again in 2012.

Answer #14

He meant “not like my crazy pastor who I wish I could disassociate myself from without alienating the Black vote”

Answer #15

Here is what he said it meant…WIP host Angelo Cataldi asked Obama about his Tuesday morning speech on race at the National Constitution Center in which he referenced his own white grandmother and her prejudice. Obama told Cataldi that “The point I was making was not that my grandmother harbors any racial animosity, but that she is a typical white person. If she sees somebody on the street that she doesn’t know (pause) there’s a reaction in her that doesn’t go away and it comes out in the wrong way.”

Answer #16

A typical white person, at least in my country (Argentina) when someone says that the person means: a straight A, athletic, Christian, pretty and “good” person. I know it doesn’t sound good of course, but at least in my country that’s what it means.

Answer #17

Obama is half “typical white person”, so it is not like he has no understanding of white racial fears. And that is what he was talking about. He wasn’t tlaking about actively being “against blacks”, or overtly racist. He was just talking about fears fostered by decades of social segregation, and institutionalized racism.

Answer #18

Interesting…

In his speech on race, Obama sought to evoke sympathy for Wright. He described a “lack of economic opportunity among black men, and the shame and frustration that came from not being able to provide for one’s family…”

Obama said this was “the reality in which Rev.

Wright’s new home has 10,340 square feet of space, about four times the size of a typical suburban house. It includes four bedrooms, an elevator, an exercise room, and a four-car garage.

Rather than being a victim of oppression of blacks, as Obama has claimed, Wright is a symbol of the American dream !
