What do you think about learning a different language in school?

I don’t think its really right to ‘have’ to learn a different language in school if you don’t want to! I have done my GCSE Spanish and I’m currently learning French, and I hate it! The teacher is always pressuring me! I think there is no point to it. It will get me a GCSE but its useless. Even if I were to go to another country for a Holiday I wouldn’t really speak the language. I think it should be optional and if you do take it you should get a choice out of what languages you want to learn. Personally I would love to learn Japanese : ) And I think I’d probably learn more because its something I’m interested in.

Do you feel the same or do you have a different opinion?

Answer #1

Yes! I deffinently want to go to college but I never realised that! I’ve already done 3 1/2 years of spanish and got a GCSE, wouldn’t that be enough?

Answer #2

The best way to learn a foreign language is to immerse yourself in it. Go live in the country and that way you have no choice but to learn the language.

Answer #3

Probably, depends on the college and what you’re going for. Also keep in mind that knowing different languages is a great attribute for finding and getting a job later in life.

Answer #4

Do you want to go to college? because most college’s require 2 years, MINIMUM of a foreign language. You may not like it, but its the way it is. If you have a giant problem with it, write to the admins at your school.

Answer #5

Even if you never use the languages in a practical way, haviing taken them will make you feel more “worldly” when you’re 30. Learning another language also helps you learn more about your own language, (ever had to try and figure out the meaning of a word with latin roots and had to draw on your french or spanish vocabulary?) and excercises different parts of your brain… so it’s not really a waste.. enjoy your second languages and feel more cosmopolitan!

Answer #6

I have a foreign exchange student in my class and she HAD to take english.

She knows five languages.

They’re just trying to help you out.

Other countries are so far ahead of us with technology, school, and other things. It makes me jealous.

I wish I knew what I know now, when I was younger. (hahaha.) So that I would have taken spanish more seriously. And wouldn’t have given it up, or taken it for granted!
