I wouldn’t say mandatory but I would stress the importance of knowing a second language. A lot of jobs now a days want you to speak 2 languages

I believe that most of your main world languages should be mandatory. Such as German, Spanish, English, French etc. It facilitates communication. Also people who speak multiple languages tend to be more clever as they have a better understanding and grasp of concepts. Sign language I would not necesarily put as mandatory, because not many people speak it i.e. not as many as the above languages,but I definitely feel that it should be encouraged.

Teaching any foreign language should be mandatory up to a certain point i.e. start teaching basics during the early years of education when it is easiest to learn a language and then making it an elective/optional class after elementary/primary school =]

Asian languages are being taught more, and more in Australian schools. Just a few nights ago, I heard a young lad speaking Mandarin in a classroom. His pronunication was apalling, tho’. He wanted to visit Beijing. Having heard any amount of Mandarin over the years, I thought no way will you be understood in China.

It would be good if people migrating to Australia were required to learn English. One of the shopkeepers in the area we live in is from China and he neither speaks, or understands English!

Hmm, great question! I don’t know if learning a variety of different languages can help us in Communication, even though it probably will, but I do think that we should a learning a type of international sign language that can help us with basic communication. Nothing complex of course. So yeah, that’s my response :*).
