What's the difference between oral herpes and genital herpes?

Hi I would like to kniw what the difference between genetal herpes and simplex herpes my boyfriend just found out the he has herpes

Answer #1

Firstly, there is a whole family of herpes viruses, with 8 in total. Genital herpes is most commonly caused by the virus called herpes simplex type 2. The herpes simplex type 1 virus is the usual cause of oral ‘cold-sores’. Obviously herpes type 1 infection can occur in the genitals, for example after oral sex.

The important thing to remember about herpes virus infection is that once you have it, you cannot cure it. Therefore it will remain in your body and will reoccur periodically throughout your life - some are lucky in that they don’t suffer recurrances too often or in some, not at all. When active genital infection is occuring (I.e. painful ulceration) it is advisable to use protection in order to prevent transmission of the virus.
