How much does the teacher matter when teaching a student?

Many people in my school district blame our failing grades on bad teachers. But it still is possible to have bad students, right? Maybe they arent studying enough.

Answer #1

While the student is a lot of the grade, obviously, even good students are less likely to work hard for bad teachers. If they don’t enjoy the class time, they’re not going to enjoy the learning, and that makes them less likely to do well. Even good students can look like bad students under bad teachers.

Answer #2

It’s definitely possible to have bad, unmotivated students. I have found, though, that different teaching techniques work better for some people. For example, I work best when lessons are hands-on and when activities can be done to learn. My history teacher in High School was amazing. He did projects that made learning fun and easy. It helped a lot that it wasn’t a boring class, you know? If the lessons were dry and boring, I’m not sure if I could have done as well there as I did.

So in all, I think it’s possible to have bad students AND teachers.

or vice-versa

Very true!

Answer #5

Here’s the thing. When they look at how students are doing, they’re looking at how all the students of that particular teacher are doing. Then they compare that to how students of other teachers in the same school are doing (thus equating the socio economic status, ethnic backgrounds, and any other factors that could make a difference) as well as how students in other schools are doing. Statistically speaking, the odds of a teacher getting a bunch of bad students year after year is tiny. So odds are, it’s the teacher. Not the students.

Answer #6

Sometimes it can be that the student is not giving full potencial, that he/she does not care and things as such. Also kids have gotten into this idea that getting bad grades and being disrespecful to teachers is “cool” That always bothers me, I’m not talking about everybody but some kids are. Some of the time it can be the teachers, I myself have had teachers like that, they don’t teach you anathing and they spect you to pass the big test, but I also think that in this situation, the student has to stand up and tell someone what is going on in the class. ( And it would not hurt if students were not afraid to keep those kids who are being bad, on track.) Then again, I do have to say that sometimes problems at home can also affect because when you have things going on it’s hard to focus because you have so much stuff in your head, also poor sopport from perents can discurage someone. Basically I think that it can be a little bit of everything.

well ill tell you one thing my friend was in high school and she didnt speak english well but she had a math class and although everything was in english which she could hardly understand she passed da class i bet alot of english students didnt pass it but why because they didnt try i think the students are the ones at fault because when someone really wants to pass their classes they can theirs always extra support they could go to…

Answer #8

I think that when a student is failing, then it’s 70% of the time, the student’s fault. But when a student is passing well, its 70% of the time the teacher’s credit. When I was in school, I had 2 teachers that i absolutely adored and it is 100% because of them and their fabulous teaching that I excelled in those 2 subjects. I owe it all to them that I passed highly (scoring 2nd in my country in one of the subjects!). I also had teachers that I disliked and they disliked me, but I still passed their subjects. When people blame failing on the teacher, it upsets me. Like, were you really on time every lesson, up the front of the class with your notes out ready to go? No. You were rolling in late, down the back chatting and passing notes. How dare you blame the teacher!!! I have a very high respect for teachers and the crap they put up with these days.
