Songwriters/Lyricists

Anyone know anything about being a songwriter or lyricist? If you can write lyrics and come up with a melody, but dont play any instruments, does that make you a songwriter or lyricist? How much does it pay and is it a competitive, secure kind of job? Would it be a suitable part-time job to make some extra money in college, since I write songs anyway and have a whole stash? Thanks, any info at all helps.

A lyricist writes simply the words. A songwriter make the tune and and melodies.

Its not a full time job, work comes in when it comes and sometimes there will be long periods of no work. It shouldn’t e a main job just a sideline to earn some extra cash. Pay depends on if we’re talking commercial hit records? if so then the amount would be reasonable as you would receive royalties. For small time bands the pay wouldn’t be life changing.
