Re: great dane breeding

I had some really great responses…my dog is from a champion blood line and she cost me 1700 dollars . My friends also came from champions I am not shure what he paid for him though. I want another one and so does he so we thought about breeding them and keeping one a peice and selling the rest. Both parents have papers and so will the puppies I just want to know if she is to young at 1 year for us to do this!

Really…it doesn’t matter what you pay…Price isn’t an indicator that you have a dog who’s put together well enough to breed. I can hear the cah-ching cah-ching running in your brain…but I’ll let some of the “real” breeders here, people who know what their doing, give you the list of expenses, and the possible emergencies, that come with a littler of pups. An immature female is more likely to have one of those emergencies.

I don’t know how old your friend’s male is, but I know your female is too young to be OFA’d…they have to be two…OFA’d means they have to be checked for hip displaysia…if you don’t do it you can be passing displaysia to some of the pups…Are you willing to give a health guarentee on these pups? That should they have a congenital defect (like displaysia), the pup can be returned for a refund?

You really better do some research…you’ve got a year to do it in (unless you decide to put your female at risk, and breed her at this young age) A Great Dane at 12 months, can be likened to a 12 year old girl…who’s body may have the capability of giving birth, but is still a long way from being fully developed.

Your going to do what you want. But at least skip the first heat. I would do a check with you Vet and get his opinion and advice on what test to run to make sure you have a healthy litter and when she will be mature enough to breed
