Why does my rat climb on the sides of her cage?

Do all rats do this? She has little latters and ramps to get to the top of her cage, but she decides to climb like spider man or something on the side of her cage. Is there a reason for this?

My hamsters did that.. I thinks it’s like they’re looking for a way out. I know I would if I were in a cage.

Rats are very intelligent and get bored with things easily, so she may just find this way more entertaining. Try giving her new toys, and rotating them. Rats love new things.

She’s just bored :S You could make her a little rat-maze. We had 2 class mice when I was little, and we brought like 20 ice-cream containers and stapled them all together in a maze line, cut ‘doors’ through each one to the next, and put grass, seeds, bark, dirt, flowers etc etc etc in each one so that the mice could run along in all different terrain. Exercising their bodies, and minds with senses of smell, touch, taste…. Your rat is probably too big to run in ice-cream containers, but maybe you could find some bigger plastic containers for free or cheaply, just sellotape, staple or glue them together, cut out door holes, and put anything (that they aren’t allergic to) in the bottom of the maze. She will love it!! You could even go further, and maybe turn a small fan on down one end just to jazz it up when your rat gets bored again.
