How to potty train my 3 year old son?

I am just thinking how can I potty train my three year old son. We have tried lots of stuff but nothing seems to work. It seems as if he is being lazy and cant be assed to tell us he needs to go. Can some one please help me

Have you considered waiting? Maybe he isn’t lazy, just not ready. Don’t rush him just because you are tired of those poopy diapers. When the time is right, apply Sue’s advice. Make it a big deal when he goes to the bathroom on the toilet. NEVER punish him when an accident occurs. I have 4 boys. Boys bladders do not mature as quickly as a girl’s and the tingling that signals it is time to go pee, may not be mature. He may not be feeling the sensation he is about to go. Ease up on him. He is only 3. If you wait and take the pressure off and the stress out, it will be much easier for the both of you. He may surprise you one day and tell you he is ready to wear underwear and that will be the end of diapers. Just like that. Give him about 3 months and try again. Allow him to set the pace.

Do you know any adults who are not potty-trained? Relax.

noname55alanna is so right! I have read about the cheerios used in the toilet, too. How cute is that? So here it is in simple terms:

  1. Wait until HE is ready
  2. Put something for him to “shoot” for in the toilet
  3. Praise him when he hits his target
  4. Wash hands

He will be a pro-potty-tinkler before you know it!

Answer #4

he might not be ready, my oldest daughter was potty trained at 14 month, my oldest son when he was 3, and my youngest son was 3 1/2. my boys were more stubborn with potty training, my husband threw some cheerios in the toilet and told my youngest son to aim for them…it worked…but we can’t buy cheerios anymore

Dear tinykitten, Making the potty a party: When your child uses the potty you make it a big deal and throw a party. This method has been proven to work time and time again. Have several balloons blown up and in a closet, a CD with party music, some party snacks saved. When the child uses the potty out comes the balloons, on goes the music and you dance and enjoy the snacks. This process may take several time but soon the child with correlate the two. As the child uses the potty more and more you begin to replace the party stuff with praise and hugs only. Sue…good luck

Hi, I don’t know about what most people do to potty train there kids but my mom would take my brother into the bathroom and place Cheerio’s in the center of the toilet and tell my brother to aim for the Cheerio’s. He learned really fast and after he went he would get his favorite snake; you just have to make sure that once he catches on he doesn’t act like he’s going to the bathroom when he’s really not. Then after that all you should have to do is praise him for doing a great job.

                                                                                                      ~Alanna
