Persephone was a grain goddess and therefore a deity for fertility.

She was taken to the underworld by Hades and forced to be his wife. Her mother didn’t like it, but struck a deal with Hades to allow Persephone to live 6 months in the underworld and 6 months on Earth. While Persephone was in the underworld, her mother made everyone suffer by making it cold and miserable. While Persephone was on Earth, her mother was happy and therefore the weather was pleasant and warm.

Essentially, they’re saying Persephone’s transitions between the realms are responsible for the transitions in our seasons (i.e.: spring/summer, fall/winter).
