I think something bad might happen because somebody at my job took an expensive personal item of a coworkers and hid it somewhere when the person who it got stolen from started to flip out everyone started looking for it and then gave up trying to find it. A few minutes went by and I tried to find it and did find it and gave it back to the person. Now it looks really bad for me like I hid the item in the first place because no one else could find it but I did.
Logically…if every item lost/stolen was thought to have been ripped off by the person who returned it…nobody would bother to even look for something, let alone bring it back.
You did what you were supposed to do.

You did the right thing. Even if it does look bad, remember that you were honest enough to return that personal item to your co-worker, and your co workers and boss saw that too.
If you have been above board and an honest worker up til now your reputation should sustain you. Don’t worry and don’t get defensive.
