How do you get back on a normal sleep schedule when you work nightshifts and have to deal with school?

I’m rather concerned with my boyfriend. Lately, he’s been sleeping a lot during the days. A few days ago he slept almost a full 24 hours, only woke to eat. He works 4AM to 10 AM some days and then he has to go to school. I’m concerned for his health and as well, this is affecting school.

Force your self to sleep at night. Doing this for 2-3 nights is sufficient for your circadian rhythm to switch back to normal.

Answer #2

how do you force yourself to sleep?

Answer #3

Oh. It just means “Do whatever helps” to make you sleep. Like sleeping pills, or milk, or eating much, or simply tiring yourself all day to force you to sleep at night. :)

You can try John’s advice. It is the quickest way, but its also the hardest way. If your going with his advice, be prepared for the fact that for a few days you are going to be really tired! I usually do the following when I need to fix my sleeping patterns. It usually happens after the holidays when I know I have to start going to bed early again, because I have to wake up early for class: I start a week before the holiday ends. I start going to bed a half an hour earlier each night and getting up a half an hour earlier each morning. I work out the hours I have to sleep, which is 7-8, and then allow that amount of time to pass before my alarm goes off. I work backwards until I reach the time that I want to go to bed and have to get up. All set. It takes me about 5-7 days and I don’t have the tiredness that goes with changing your sleep schedule.
