Why does my puppy bite me?

Hi have a goldendoodle who is 4 months old and sometimes he bites me for no reason. yesterday whilst in the park I was throwing his ball which he was quite happy to retrieve then after the 3rd throw he didn’t run after the ball but jumped at me and bit me repeatedly. I had to put him back on his lead and restrain him in order for him to stop. Does any one know why this behaviour happened. He has done this a few times to me now even when we have just left the house for our daily walks he has jumped at me and bit me. Please help Nina

it may be from teethig ,but he wouldnt be that aggresive. he might not be feeling well his stomach may be irratating him. you might want to not play as aggresive and take him to the vet.

Puppies teeth grow and makes them want to bite things. Also dogs and general like biting on things and playing. I suggest you buy your puppy a chewing bone or get him a nice stick to gnaw on. You also have to teach him not to bite you by training him but don’t forget to play with him!

i learned this from a puppy training book. when he bites you , you hold his mouth shut around the muzzle and you say “no bite!!!” they dont like their mouth being held closed and it puts thier attention directly on you. this may take a while to sink in, but it does work.

sometimes when my dog gets a little too rough when he is playing he will acidentally bite and i do this to him and he gets the message right away.

Your puppy is trying to sort out pack order, you are the head of the pack and need to firmly let him know that biting is not acceptable-otherwise you may end up in the unfortunate position of having to put him down because he’s bitten the wrong person!! You are on the right track putting his lead back on, follow this up with firm “NO BITTING”. If you are concerned about him in public places you could always muzzle him. Good luck

All your dog wants to do is play and gets wrilled up. So you just half to ingore him and turn to the oppostie direction. I have a 10 month old puppy with adult teeth so it hurts a lot so I slap at him even though he just wants to play.

  1. Go to Borders or Barns and Nobel and get a couple of books on dog training e.g. Puppies for Dummies, or similar.
  2. Get chew toys or treats (e.g. Pizzle Sticks) that will satisfy your dogs need to chew.
  3. If he chews on you hard enough to hurt, yelp like a puppy and turn your back on him until he calms down, about 15 seconds. When he learns that nipping means the fun is over he will stop nipping. Do not withhold your attention for very long at a time. Frequency, not duration will teach the lesson.

How old is your puppy? All puppies think of this as a game. They dont know it hurts or that its bad. You just have to teach them, just like little kids that this is not acceptable. I have a puppy that sometimes does this too, but he has gotten much better. Good Luck!

I know this feed is old but hopefully someone will see this. I have the exact same issue right now with my 3 month old yellow lab. When we play or if she gets really excited she nips at our hands and legs. I also have an 8 year old daughter that seems to add to the confusion for the puppy. When she (my daughter) runs through the house the puppy nips at her legs because she thinks its time to play. I completely agree with step 3 above. We have been doing this for about 1 week now and it seems to be helping a little. Whatever you do don’t smack her or use a spray bottle. Doing so will only make her think its a game and she’ll bite more. Do not play tug of war with her toys. This makes her associate chewing or biting with your hands. If anyone has any other info please don’t hesitate to answer back!!

The majority of you are wrong, puppies like to teeth on stuff because it feels good on their gums to chew. Golden retrievers and poodles are smart breeds they need something challenging, I sugguest you get a kong and stuff peanut butter in it. Or one of those toy/cube busters.
