Puppy biting issue

We have a new lab mix puppy who loves to play with our 5 year old toy fox terrier who is 6 pounds. The problem is that she doesn’t know how to play gentle yet and I am afraid the tft is going to get hurt, even though we supervise. Any suggestions??

Get the Dog Whisperer videos… and watch them… You’ll love learning how dogs think, and learn, and you’ll have more home harmony…and have a lifetime education in understanding dog behavior.

Answer #2

Your older dog will tell the puppy how much is too much…however, a Toy Fox Terrier is very small, and Lab pups like to use their feet as well as their teeth…they also like to play rough.

You have to do MORE than just supervise…you need to direct the “play”…just like an alpha dog would do…step in, say NO, to the pup…or even pick up your terrier, ending the game. Puppies LOVE to play, and by you ending the game, it’s learning to respect you the same way it would lear to respect a “pack-leader”…Two birds with one stone…you’re building respect from the pup, and at the same time, protecting your small dog from injury. The pup will learn, that roughness equals “no play at all”…

It won’t be very long before your pup respects YOU…and your terrier will also put it into it’s place (the terrier will know, too, that you are willing to protect him).
