My Puppy Bites

I have a 3 month old puppy (boy). He keeps biting on everyone. He bites not because he is angry or aggresive. The thing is he thinks that it is a fun thing to do. So, whenever he is hyperactive and wants to play, he’ll bite anyone who is near him. Sometimes, it is not painful but at times it really hurts and will leave marks the day after. I have no idea how to control his biting habbit. I already tried to give him toys whenever he is going to bite. But it only helped for a while then he’ll start biting on people again. I am afraid if one day my friends or family come to my place and he’ll bite them. What sould I do in order to teach him not to bite and teach him obidience. Can anyone help me?

Hi, its completely natural for puppies to want to bite with play, thats how they played with their littermates but you are absolutely right to stop it as if it goes unchecked it will lead to problems. I have a 9 month old pup and the main thing I think worked to stop her biting was to make a loud puppy-like yelp and turn away from her, stopping playing with her for a bit then go back to her (what her littermates would have done if she got too rough). You’re also doing the right thing with giving him a toy to bite on instead but make sure you give him lots of praise when he chews the right things and not your skin. No disrespect to the other posters here but I wouldn’t put a muff (is that like a muzzle?) on his face at this stage - that would have to come when you really had failed and there is a risk of him actually biting. Just to add, we’ve been saying biting but we are actually talking about nipping! If I dog wants to bite you he’ll bite you hard and draw blood, if there is no blood it isn’t a bite, just either a playful or a warning nip - thats just something to remember if someone claims your dog bit them!

The newspaper worked for my dog and she is not scared of it. You dont hit them hard just to scare them.

Answer #3

dude all you do is spreay him in the face with a little water and he will keep doing it for a while but once you have done it a few times and he keeps doing it spray him more and say bad dog once in a stearn voice. that should do it.

Answer #4

Take a rolled up newspaper and when he goes to bite hit him one the but. Not hard just enough to make a noise when it hits. You dont want to hurt him you just want to scare him.

Answer #5

Try to squirt him with a water bottle in the face when he bites. They usually dont like it, and it may work. It doenst always though. Good luck, I know puppies can be a handful sometimes.

Answer #7

Don’t use the newspaper one. Its a common mistake which leads to dogs being scared of newspapers!

Answer #8

Thank you, I do know that spraying them in the face works. My puppies bite on furniture all the time. After like the 3rd r 4th time they get a face full of water, they stop. :)

Answer #9

Put a muff on his face when you know that people are coming over.
