my computer will not read my external hard drive

I have been using my WD passport (USB drive) hard drive for several months. it has been working perfectly fine for me. I recently unplugged it, and when I plugged it back in, the computer will not read it anymore. all of my information is on that hard drive and without it I am completely lost. HELPP !

Answer #1

Go to Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Computer Management

Click on disk management and it should bring up a list of disks. Right click on your USB disk and select Change drive letter and paths. This should reassign your external drive a new letter and should now be recognised.

If using Vista, press the Start Orb > Right Click ‘Computer’ and select Manage, then do the same as above.
