external hard drive NOT working.

ok so I got my laptop today bc I broke my other one. they charged me 179.99 to back my laptop up bc I have SOOO much important stuff on it. and when I went to plug it in today, it said it was transferring everything, but it did NOT work. I tried the same thing about 7 times. its a WD hard drive, thats all I know about it. the laptop is brand new, and so is the hard drive. help?

Is there enough room on the laptop for everything you’re transferring? Does the laptop recognize the hard drive when you plug it in?
