What is your definition of a mental illness?

I am looking for peoples understanding of mental illness? Please let me know your understanding? cheers

Well this can be argued, some psychologists dont like the word illness, they prefer to think of it as day to day problems that a person is dealing with.

But I like to go with a pattern of thinking or behavior which is deviant, dysfuncational, usually causes distress, and could be dangerous to self or others.

my mum has a mental illness she has bi pollar which is pretty hard she has her ups and downs but she is still her chattty self when she is better but she gets depressed easy but now she is going stronger than ever she has been out of hospiltal for over 5 years and I pray she does keep it up but at the end of the day I wouldnt change her for the world because even tho she has bipollar its her personality that counts not eather she has a mental illness or not
