Does anyone know, medically, how to stop from nail biting?

my mom says i might have low iron or something. ive been biting my names for like forever and im only 16. its probably one of the worst nail biting cases out there. i say im going to stop and then sometimes i bite my nail just out of nowhere. i wanna be able to have nice nails and paint but i cant because of my problem.

That’s not low iron.. That’s a nervous tick. Many people have them, you just have a higher case. This could be due to stress, anxiety, or a multitude of other things. Consult your local physician, maybe a psychologist (not trying to offend you, they really do help and can refer you to a psychiatrist that will give you anxiety meds) just to see why for sure. Until then, I would recommend a low dose of melatonin, probably about 10 mg. It’s a natural over-the-counter relaxant that helps with stress and anxiety. Also, try using aromatherapy with lavender oil or the Bach Flower Remedies’ Rescue Remedy.

There are a lot of over the counter solutions you can put on your nails to stop you from biting them (i.e. Thum, or even Bitter Apple spray for dogs) but this only stops you fro physically biting them. I do agree with Tori that you should figure out what causes your nail biting, but this would be cheaper than a therapist.

There are remedies that can help without needing to go to the doctors. Nail biting is not a medical head problem that extreme to have to go see a shrink - it’s just a bad habit from nervousness.

There are bitter polishes made for nail biters. Some are ‘Bite It’, ‘Mavala’, ‘Control It’.. So many different treatment kits you can try. They put some stuff in their products to make them taste foul, so when you chew your nails, its a bitter taste to remind you to not bite. Usually available at local pharmacies or maybe even Walmart. Carry some with you at all times. Apply the solution several times a day.

Plus for me, best way to stop biting my nails was to start getting them done - acrylics at first then switched to only manicures. After a few months, I stopped wearing fake nails and I had somewhat broke out of the habit. Plus my nails had grown longer and made me cherish them more and easier not to bite them.
