How do I tell my managers about an allergy to a cleaning product we have to use?

I grew out in red blotches on my arms and hands when I used a cleaning product called Ajax. It makes my asthma horrible and I come out in rashes. I’m positive this is an allergy but I haven’t been to my doctor about it. When I finish using it, I use a skin cream and it’s fine in a few days. I told my managers that i’m allergic and they think i’m too lazy to put it onto chillers and surfaces but i’m not. Do I have to go to the doctor to write me out a note explaining I can’t use it? They just think i’m lying about it and i’ve shown them the rashes and everything.

I worked at Burgerking before and this one guy that would work in the back with food and you have to wear gloves, well he was allergic to the latex gloves, so they had to order a different glove made out of a different material for him. So yea it happens, so just tell them, it”ll be ok!

Answer #4

just be frank and tell the manager i’m 98% sure he gonna listen and do something about it. things would be different if u were in some developing countries where they don’t really give a fuc@k about work environment but where u at it should be fine.

Legally, your employer cannot force you to do something that is, in some way, harmful to you. The problem is proving it. Have you seen a doctor about the reaction? If so, you can request notation from your doctor that you are not to handle this chemical in any way.

Answer #6

If you are sure that it is the Ajax that you have an allergy to. Next time you have a flare up, visit your GP and if possible take a sample of the product you are using.

Your GP will be able to confirm that you are allergic and will give you a letter to present to your employers.

It is your employer, then, that will have to provide an alternative product.

Hope this helps
